The Good Humor Rapist

One of the biggest viral stories on social media last week was a laughably idiotic Finnish "how to" video that ostensibly demonstrates the proper way for women to defend themselves against rapists. The video, produced by state-run broadcaster Yle, reveals the top three police-certified methods that women should use against an attacker: "No," "Push," and "Handbag."

In the video, a young blond woman, trudging her way down a snowy street, is accosted by a white ne'er-do-well (needless to say, the Finnish media would never dare portray the attacker as a nonwhite immigrant or "refugee"). Upon being grabbed by the unwelcome roisto, the young lady turns and forcefully shouts, "Ei!" ("no"). Humiliated and defeated, the Bieberesque thug sheepishly relents and walks away. In scenario No. 2, the pesky grabber returns, this time to be met with a two-handed open-palm push (accompanied, bafflingly, by a Jedi-type repelling force). Again, the attacker yields, unable to pierce the impenetrable defense. Finally, in scenario 3, the woman is forced to bring out the big guns--her handbag, which she swings with grit and determination at her assailant, who cowers and runs in abject terror.

The accompanying article on the Yle website informs readers that the actions depicted in the video represent the limit of what a woman facing a potential rapist is allowed to do; anything more would constitute "excessive force."

As should have been expected, the video was met with much-deserved online ridicule. From News.com.au:

The anti-rape video has been likened to advice given by the mayor of Cologne to remain at "arm's length" from attackers.... Finnish social media users were scathing. "It's a shame you've only made this video now," wrote Ville Mikkonen. "This would have come in handy on New Year in Helsinki, Cologne and elsewhere." Some questioned whether the video was a joke or a Saturday Night Live sketch.... Many were simply angry. "It's not even funny anymore, but really, really pathetic that it's come to this," wrote Jaana Tuukkanen.

Facebook users from around the world have pilloried Yle's official page with hundreds of derisive comments. Several Americans have commented to the effect of "It won't be long before these types of videos are forced upon us here."

"The U.S. is not yet Finland. We still have the ability to create enough vocal outrage that the government will back down."

"Won't be long"? Have some faith in your country, why don't ya? The U.S. under Obama may no longer lead the world in areas like science and technology, but dammit we're still No. 1 where it counts--social justice! U.S. government leftists produced a much worse version of that Finnish video, and they did it back in 2013. Yes, our politically correct social engineers beat the Finns to the punch by three whole years. And the production of our "nonviolent rape defense" video wasn't left to a bunch of glorified Youtubers pushing buttons at a state-run TV station. Our "be kind to rapists" video was produced by the United States Department of Defense! And it makes the Finnish video look like a Charles Bronson film.

The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), headquartered at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, is the "social justice" educational arm of the U.S. Department of Defense. It was created in 1971 as the Defense Race Relations Institute. In 1979, under President Carter, the name was changed to DEOMI, and the mandate was expanded to combat "racism, sexism, and intolerance." Tens of thousands of U.S. military personnel and civilians graduate from DEOMI's courses. DEOMI serves all branches of the armed forces. The DEOMI commandant, a political appointee, answers to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.

In June 2012, Capt. Yolanda Y. Reagans became DEOMI's first black female commandant. And in January 2013, DEOMI debuted an instructional video that has to be seen to be believed. Titled "Bystander Intervention Training," the video introduced Americans to the nine points of "nonviolent action" that can stop a murderer or rapist cold in his tracks. Forget guns. Forget knives. Forget karate, pepper spray, or even Finnish handbags. These nine government-approved courses of action are all anyone needs (or should be allowed to use) in response to a rape or murder in progress.

The video opens with a startlingly brutal cartoon re-creation of the murder of Catherine "Kitty" Genovese, the 28-year-old woman whose rape and murder in a Queens neighborhood in 1964 sparked national soul-searching after it was reported that neighbors ignored her cries for help. Genovese was stabbed repeatedly in the back by a stranger named Winston Moseley, who then raped her as she lay dying. Moseley was a serial killer and necrophiliac whose "thing" was to stab a woman and rape her as she bled out. Ideally, he'd try to climax at the moment his victim passed.

I'll admit, initially I was baffled that a government-led agency, one commanded by a black Obama appointee, would choose to dramatize the Genovese murder. Genovese was white, Moseley was black, and the "cartoon" doesn't hide that fact. In retrospect, I think I understand why the Genovese case was chosen, but I'll get to that later.

After dramatizing the Genovese murder, the video presents the nine nonviolent actions that one should take if confronted by a rapist/murderer/necrophiliac like Moseley. Here are the nine points, verbatim. No, this is not satire:

(1) Name or Acknowledge the Offense

(2) Identify the Obvious

(3) Interrupt Behavior

(4) Publicly Support the Aggrieved Person

(5) Use Body Language

(6) Carefully Use Humor

(7) Encourage Dialogue

(8) Ease Strong Feelings

(9) Call for Help

The video's narrator, a young "woman of color" who initially appears in civilian clothing only to morph into full uniform at the video's end (damn, I should have said "spoiler alert"), explains that although "assault or rape" is the first thing that comes to mind when "bystander intervention" is involved, these strategies can also be used to combat "harassment, hazing, or discrimination in its infancy." As ludicrous as the Finnish video is, this one is a hundred bad miles of worse. "Humor"? "Body language"? "Dialogue"? "Easing strong feelings"? In the face of an attack by someone like Winston Moseley? At least the Finnish video allows the victim to touch the prospective rapist. The Department of Defense video prohibits any physical contact. Because of course any serial-killing necrophiliac rapist will respond well to "humor." I'm surprised the video didn't come with an accompanying book of jokes to help break the ice.

In a wonderfully ironic twist, the government's video about defeating a rapist with humor was itself defeated with humor. In March 2013 I produced a parody video (in association with Eric Porvaznik of Threedonia) demonstrating exactly how it would look if a bystander stumbling upon a violent rape-murder in progress tried to use the government's "nine points" to defuse the situation. The parody video was carried far and wide by sites like The Daily Caller and Independent Journal Review. Within days I was contacted by "Equal Opportunity Leadership Instructor" SFC Michael Patterson, who scolded me for producing a satirical video that harmed "an organization that promotes dignity and respect for all" (especially serial rapists who enjoy hearing jokes while they work). Due to the response to my parody, DEOMI pulled the original video from public view. Fortunately, one or two folks saved copies before it vanished down the memory hole (a spokesperson for DEOMI refused last week to comment on whether the video is still in use privately).

I'm not a terribly optimistic person, but I do think it's a good sign that the makers of the DEOMI video felt pressured to pull it, unlike the Finnish TV station, which continues to stand by its production. The U.S. is not yet Finland. We're not yet Scandinavia or Germany. We still have the ability to create enough vocal outrage that the government will back down. That's good news, and it offers at least a sliver of hope for the future of this country.

But even after I deep-sixed the video, I was still plagued by the nagging question that I expressed earlier in this piece: Why did the powers-that-be choose to dramatize the Genovese/Moseley crime? Why a black-on-white rape-murder? Why not a crime perpetrated by the kind of white redneck Billy Bobbin' bad guy the government always loves to present as the face of American violence and villainy?

Late last year, I think I might have found the answer. Simone Sebastian, an editor at The Washington Post, penned an op-ed about Black Lives Matter protesters in which she claimed that "aggression and violence" are "necessary for progress" in the fight for "racial equality." In one of the most amazing examples of pure bullshit phraseology I have ever encountered, Sebastian, who is black, wrote that the civil rights movement has demonstrated that, for blacks, "nonviolence was useless without violence." That's like saying veganism is useless without meat-eating. If you eat meat, you're not practicing veganism, and nonviolence accompanied by violence is--by definition--not nonviolence.

Social justice warriors are advocating two completely different definitions of nonviolence--one for nonwhites, for whom nonviolence can totally include violence, and one for whites, for whom nonviolence means absolute, complete passivity even in the face of a monster like Winston Moseley. And that's why Moseley was used as the example in the Department of Defense video. The SJWs wanted to present the exact scenario that their nonviolent instruction was intended for. As Black Lives Matters protesters are being told that they can be as aggressive and brutal as they want while still claiming the moral high ground of "nonviolence," everyone else is being told that to use anything more than "humor, dialogue, and body language" in the face of the Winston Moseleys of the world is a violation of "allowable" behavior.

The Finnish SJWs still feel the need to couch their demand for passivity in unrealistic images of marauding rapists who resemble Ricky Schroder. Our SJWs are confident enough to be a lot more honest in their imagery: Winston Moseley is the man you'll meet in that dark alley, and you better not respond with anything stronger than careful humor.

The Department of Defense, and--by extension--the Obama administration, may have lost a round when they were forced to pull the video, but the sheer amount of audacity it took to produce it in the first place is cause for serious concern.

I may have to take back that thing I said about a sliver of hope.

Today's really GOOD news!

A full 25 percent of federal employees say they would consider quitting if Donald Trump is elected president, according to a survey by the Government Business Council.

While 67 percent of federal employees surveyed said they would not quit their jobs if Trump is elected, 14 percent said they would definitely consider quitting, and 11 percent said they would think about it, Politico reported.

Can't happen fast enough for me.

Hands over attackers ears, thumbs on his eyes. Pushed with thumbs until you hear a squish. Don’t be surprised by the screaming.

“I may have to take back that thing I said about a sliver of hope.”

I’m on the verge of that as well. It’s all I can do to contain my anger at some of the garbage along these same lines of stupidity that are being instilled in our youth in the public school system. Our children are being weaned from reality; that’s the only way to describe it. And without pulling them into an ugly and damaging battle, there’s no way to combat the damage that’s being done short of removing them entirely from the system. For the vast majority, that’s not possible. So, yes, my hope is waning for any great reversal of the downslide of our nation.

Good list of steps!

(1) Name or Acknowledge the Offense: rape/assault/whatever - a violent crime by an evil predator

(2) Identify the Obvious: our God-given individual right to keep and bear arms may not be infringed, and an attack is the appropriate time to exercise that right

(3) Interrupt Behavior: Use your firearm judiciously to “stop the threat”. Two to the chest and one to the head is a response with a high probability of success, but this response must be interrupted if the threat is stopped before all three shots are fired.

(4) Publicly Support the Aggrieved Person: When the lace-pantie prosecutor tries to press charges against the victim, (1) as a juror vote to acquit, and (2) as a citizen vote the prosecutor out of office.

(5) Use Body Language: Give the victim a thumbs up, or as the victim, try to look appropriately contrite over the sad death of a peaceful person or of a troubled kid who was just turning his life around.

(6) Carefully Use Humor: Joke about it to make the victim feel better about ending a (more or less) human life. As the victim, be VERY careful about using humor almost anywhere.

(7) Encourage Dialogue: Talk with others about why they should be armed too and about the benefits of armed self defense over acting like a sissy.

(8) Ease Strong Feelings: Don’t hold a grudge. Bury the perpetrator and then move on with life.

(9) Call for Help: After the event, call police. Report the crime and that you were the victim. Point out evidence (”there’s the rapist’s knife, there’s the shell casings from me firing in self-defense when I was in fear for my life”). Perhaps ask for an ambulance for yourself, for chest pain/discomfort, perhaps say you will be happy to tell more details once your lawyer is present. Then call a lawyer and say nothing more.

grab attacker by the balls.
pull - hard!
twist - for all you’re worth!
continue until he passes out.
don’t give up when he hits you - he is gonna hurt you regardless.
don’t let go until he is neutralized.

few women realize how vulnerable a rapist is when he gets right down to it.
