Article published on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016

As of Feb. 15, 21 cases of the virus have been confirmed in the state, including three in nearby Hillsborough County. Seven cases have been confirmed in Miami-Dade County, three in Lee, four in Broward, one in Santa Rosa, one in St. Johns, one in Osceola and one in Alachua County.

Scientists believe that the newly revealed Zika virus that is exploding in South America is carried by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito that has been proliferating in India, doubling the incidence of dengue in the country last year. yaleglobal.yale.edu

With its mild climate, Florida is susceptible to mosquito-borne diseases. Over the years, the state has experienced sporadic outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya - other tropical diseases carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is prevalent in Florida. kplu.org
