No reason why Thomas couldn't be promoted to Chief Justice if Roberts resigns or dies.

Most likely he won't be, however, Just as Scalia wasn't named Chief Justice when Roberts was appointed.

Just as Scalia wasn't named Chief Justice when Roberts was appointed.

I've wondered whether Scalia was offered it and declined. Perhaps we'll never know.

Doesn't a replacement for the chief depend on the current sitting POTUS? WWTD? What Would TRUMP Do?
