The linked article is a monstrosity of Leftist psycho-babble attempting to "scientifically" explain why the 'NASCAR-watching, Bud Lite-swilling, Bible-thumping rubes in flyover country' who comprise a significant proportion of the body politic are not wise enough to embrace their 'wisdom' and instead stubbornly cling to the principles upon which the Party of Abraham Lincoln were founded.

After all, how could anyone who is intelligent, well-informed and decent possibly want illegal immigration stopped, Obamacare repealed and the fight taken to our Islamic terrorist enemies [rather than inviting thousands of them to live in our homelands to rape our women and slaughter us wholesale]?

It is the Left who are the elitists who distrust the citizenry -- whom they want kept ignorant, impoverished and disenfranchised. Orwellians to the core, they characterize those who advocate for freedom as authoritarian troglodytes while those who seek centralized control and crushing redistributive collectivism are progressive and Enlightened.

Nay, this vainglorious screed is a satire of how Leftists regard conservatives -- and demonstrates, through a long-winded Straw Man construction, how their dogmatic limitations make it impossible for them to understand their ideological adversaries.

What is the real reason for the rise of Trump's support?

Thank the RINOs for creating an appetite for the likes of Trump.

Too many times have they marginalized the true conservative GOP Presidential candidates and rammed another RINO down our throats -- followed by a White House victory-by-default for the Party of Jim Crow.

Too many times have they promised during campaign season to stand up for freedom and advocate for the expressed wishes and interests of the middle class -- only to cave to the Democrat fascists once sworn into office.

Any candidate who is feared and hated so much by the Left, the Democrats -- and their RINO appeasers -- is going to get a following.

I am not one of Trump's supporters, but certainly do not hold them to be stupid, ill-informed, emotional and/or evil -- as the elites on both sides of the aisle characterize.

They are fed up with being taken for granted if not openly disdained by the GOP leadership -- who consistently betray the principles of freedom, equality under the law and individual empowerment upon which the Party of Abraham Lincoln were founded.

I love how the Left describes how anyone who opposes them are authoritarian. Please tell me what has been more authoritarian, if not totalitarian, than the Political Correctness of the Left.

Nah, Americans are just sick of Obama, the limp wristed “republicans”, globalism, and political correctness.

It did not start with Trump. It started with Obama. But Trump is following in Obama’s footsteps.

Yeah, we all know the Left would never be authoritarian.

Given Vox’s SJW leanings, they should look in the mirror and at their friends for authoritarian qualities.

If authoritarians support Trump, why hasn’t Hillary dropped out and gotten on board the Trump bandwagon?

What stands out from the results... is that authoritarians "are most willing to want to use force, to crack down on immigration"

Enforcing our immigration laws, either current or future, isn't "authoritarian oppression."

I've been wishing the Republicans could come up with a candidate that could generate the genuinely excited crowds that Trump has. It doesn't mean I approve everything he says.

We have a president who has been so authoritarian impeachment proceedings should have been begun but our Congress is too wimpy and dishonest. Whatever happened to the lawsuit Boehner started?

Extremism is a relative term. In part, it applies to the times in which one lives. Halting Muslim immigration briefly (I'd like it forever I'll say for most of them - that is extreme). I feel threatened by them seeing that they don't assimilate and don't appear to like us. Illegal immigration should have been stopped in its tracks years ago. Sending them back wouldn't have aroused the passions then like now. I'm torn about sending them back; maybe we should give them financial incentives to go back on their own. Breaking our laws should not be rewarded.

Now if Trump starts rounding up groups of dissidents and puts them in FEMA camps, we ought to take notice no matter who they are. Oh wait, who would do that if they could get away with it? Hint. It isn't Trump.

[Art.] After an early period of junk science in the mid-20th century, a more serious group of scholars has addressed this question .....

Hmmm, sounds like they're referencing some old non-Leftist academics from the early 50's .... and trying to bury them.

Suddenly, I'm intensely curious about what their "junk science" theory was, and why they're now not worth naming, even when denouncing them. The author's in just a bit to much of a hurry to rush past the old work .... it's called "preterition" when it's used as a rhetorical device ("I will not linger over my opponent's chronic alcoholism ....."), but here it just looks like a plea to ignore a different opinion.

This is all academic Marxist oppo. The 'Rats have wanted for years to call Republicans "Nazis", and here the Marxist academics have delivered their homework, right in the middle of an election season. We'll see this stuff discussed with a straight face all year.

Until Hillary wins. If that happens, you'll never hear of this stuff again.

[Art.] small but respected niche of academic research has been laboring over a question, part political science and part psychology, that had captivated political scientists since the rise of the Nazis. How do people come to adopt, in such large numbers and so rapidly, extreme political views that seem to coincide with fear of minorities and with the desire for a strongman leader?

They're calling us Nazis. The holy grail of Communist/Leftist political smears.

Exactly.

The original article was a hell of a lot of text to say “conservatives suck, progressives are cool”.

They’re just repeating old Frankfurt School neo-Marxism, who were the primordial anti-authoritarian authoritarians.

Theodor Adorno was the one who labeled anti-leftists as authoritarian, painting them with the Nazi brush.

It’s only natural, considering that these bunch of commies were recognized as corrosive to society by Hitler’s bunch and forced out of Germany because of it. Nazis hated them (even a broken clock is right twice a day) so they hated Nazis.
