Governments in conservative states would be wise to construct a SHTF plan in conjunction with Texas. Oklahoma, Wyoming and North Dakota are all obvious candidates with comparable economies. Utah with its Mormon majority could obviously become functional with a replacement government currency as could scattered Amish communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and the Maryland panhandlers who would enlist many of their English neighbors such as me.

Add in conservative states in the general area such as Idaho, Arizona and the remaining Great Plains States in the west and Indiana, Kentucky and the former Confederate States in the south and you are left with a rump collection of urban states which are still greater than a collapsed national socialist government can deal with.

In fact, such a government would have a hard time dealing with giant cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston to Washington in its midst, let alone rescuing fringe enclaves such as Boulder, Denver and possibly even Pittsburgh on its frontiers.

Rural America is largely still somewhat sane.

The degree of self sufficiency is pretty small. Could that be overcome? It depends.

Pretty scary times.
