FPL nuclear plant canals leaking into Biscayne Bay, study confirms
Miami Herald ^ | March 7, 2016 | Jenny Staletovich

A radioactive isotope linked to water from power plant cooling canals has been found in high levels in Biscayne Bay, confirming suspicions that Turkey Point’s aging canals are leaking into the nearby national park.

Heard about it from a guy at work. He seems to think it's a big deal.

Having the fish already cooked when you catch them saves time.

Good grief. We have plenty of natural gas. I say, scrap these damn things.

They may be safe and sound for years, but when a disaster strikes a nuclear plant, it's usually a freaking doosey.

Then we have to extract highly radioactive waste and bury it out in the desert.

Fukashima, Chernobyl disasters are all the evidence one needs to make the case for shutting these damn things down.

Funny. In cold years in Florida the Manatees swarm to the canals for comfort in the warmer water which empties into the Indian River. What's flowing is cooling tower water, not reactor exposed water which has any radiation.

The warm nuclear reactor flows are attributed to one of the reasons for increased numbers of manatees.

Cooling water that has been in the reactor doesn’t get discharged. It goes through a heat exchanger. The discharged water is warm, that’s it. If not, then something is seriously broken inside that reactor unless it is some antique design.

If I recall, the rules regarding cooling tower water discharge to the tributaries requires no more than a five degree temperature differential of temperature. IOW a cooling tower water discharge into a body of water, river, or stream which is 60 degrees may only be discharged with water cooled down to 65 degrees.

Just looking up the number killed in the US by natural gas compared to nuclear power plants ...

Until somebody quantifies "high levels," there is no way to know. It's common for alarmists to cite things like "2000% increase," which is also meaningless without a baseline value. The permitted radiation leak from a power plant is probably 1,000 times LESS than the amount known to create any measurable health risk.

I’ve been there many times. Sailed around there many times.
We used to take novices out at night and exclaim the phosphorescent algae floating by was refuse from the plant.

Little did we know.....(ok, just sayin’)

” The discharged water is warm, that’s it. If not, then something is seriously broken inside that reactor unless it is some antique design.”

The tritium comes from water containing boron activated OUTSIDE the fuel rods. Nuclear reactors routinely release the triated water to the environment in addition to many unintended ‘spills’.

“Until somebody quantifies “high levels,” there is no way to know.”

Natural tritium in water in that area is about 10 pCi/L. Two hundred times that would be 2,000 pCi/L.

EPA drinking water standards allow up to 20,000 pCi/L.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that Tritium is showing up in any measurable quantity unless there is a breach in the primary coolant.

If that were the case, you would be seeing LOTS of things much more dangerous than Tritium.
