Wow! Max Cleland, I forgot about him. He took the same path as Duckworth. Run the VA and capture a Georgia Senate seat with the sympathy vote. Lockstep Democrat in Georgia. Was happy to see him go when he finally lost.
However, that does not give her a pass on anything.
The information in this article is a bit thin. But there seem to be indications that Duckworth has been remiss in some areas of Veterans Affairs as well as those directly pertinent to the military. In these she should held to the highest standards expected of a veteran, without apologies, or "pity poor me" excuses of any kind.
Dude.... I said Kirk was not ideal but do you honestly think Duckworth would defund Planned Parenthood? Those are the two choices, but at least with Kirk we have a vote on some big issues once in a while. What is the alternative?
Apparently the sympathy vote works. There are FREEPERS who say they will support her because she will be good on “Vet issues”
Given that Tammy Duckworth is a Democrat. Given that the Democrats are ignoring our veterans because the VA is incompetent.
How many veterans are still waiting for medical attention? How many veterans have died before they could see a doctor?
Or would the Democrats rather continue their name calling instead of doing their jobs? What has Tammy done recently for our veterans?
Should she not instead explore in what way she is not supporting our veterans, instead of pretending that she was insulted? What is wrong with constructive criticism?
There is no denying the guy is nuts and more than a little stupid but he often says funny stuff when he is not trying to be funny.
Tend to agree: Kirk is just another RINO member of the combine. Get rid of him and maybe there’s room for new blood.
One only stinks after you read it.
Trump would most likely nominate RINOs (or outright Dems) who kiss his butt and tell him how wonderful he is, and I could see Kirk likely rubber stamping RINOs.
In the event Trump named an actual Scalia type justice, Kirk would be EXACTLY the kind of "Republican" to raise "concern" that the nominee is "too extreme for America" and give the Dems "bipartisan" support in Borking them.
Kirk will also rubber stamp ANY nominee from a Dem President, regardless of how far-left they are. Kirk being the LONE Republican Senator to confirm Obama's radical left nominee for Surgeon General is proof of that. Even the Maine RINOs wouldn't touch that one.
Well until the Republican party in Illinois can put forth a viable conservative candidate, I will take my chances with Kirk rather over Duckworth—who would be voting along with Barbara Boxer.
Kirk, I believe is smart enough, that he must throw some bones to conservatives in order to keep his position. He can’t win the election with Country Club Republicans, he needs downstate and Dupage County without giving them everything they want.
All that matters is whether he will confirm President Trumps nominees. I predict he would do that.
Suckworth is HORRIBLE on veterans issues, judging by her "service" to them when she got a cushy job at the VA office after losing a congressional race where the Dems pulled out every stop to get her elected and still failed.
I agree with Impy that ANY FReeper endorsing Suckworth should get zotted here. It's weird to see that happening on a Mark Kirk thread though. Usually FReepers openly promoting RAT candidates do it in "safe" Republican states", saying so-and-so Republican who is 50X more conservative than Kirk "deserves to lose" for straying on some important issue... but hypocritically, we "have to" vote for Mark Kirk "or the Democrats will win" and he's the "best we can get" in a RAT state.
Finally, in all honesty, I don't think weaselly RINO Kirk is any better on "supporting the troops" than Suckworth, though the media and Kirk apologists in the GOP always spread some narrative that he's an "expert" on military intelligent and looks out for us overseas, blah blah blah. Kirk claims to be "with us" on military/troops/veteran issues but has turned traitor numerous times. This guy would drive over his own mother if some poll told him it would get him votes in Illinois.
I stand my predictions.
I predict Trump will not be elected President.
In the UNLIKELY event that Trump gets elected President, I predict he will NOT name conservative nominees.
In the even more UNLIKELY event that Trump gets elected AND names good conservative, Scalia-type judges, I predict Kirk will join with the Dems and Bork them.
We can check back in 2017 and see who's right. I will be happy to bet money on any of the above three scenarios.
Well Trump has basically signaled he would appoint conservative nominees and gave names. I would hope he would follow through. It was Bush I that appointed David Souter and Bush II tried to get Harriet Miers on the court. St. Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor knowing that she was in favor of Roe v. Wade, but did not care. I’m digressing.
But as I am saying, I don’t approve of Kirk’s philosophy at all and I wish I had someone to vote for more conservative. But I hope and think he is smart enough that most of his bread is buttered by conservative voters downstate and Dupage county as to not anger them.
He hasn't cared for the last six years, nor did he care for the decade he was in the house and routinely stabbed his base in the back. Why would he start caring now?
EVERY single "conservative" position Kirk took to woo gullible conservatives in 2010 (I'll oppose amnesty if the border isn't secure, I'll vote against cloture at a lame duck session, I'll fight to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, etc.) has since been broken. Clearly Kirk thinks he can flip the bird to conservatives who elected him, and they will continue to vote for him anyway because he has an "R" next to his name.
Well as much as I disagree with Kirk. The Illinois Republican voters and party are to blame. Kirk had no competition in 2010.
RINO Rauner won in a three way race against that guy from Dupage County and that guy from Bloomington- name escapes me. But both were more conservative than Rauner.
The last conservative we have had statewide was Peter Fitzgerald.
I agree with you that I hate the RINO’s, but it seems like they keep getting forced on us for some reason.I don’t understand because the Republicans outside of Lake County are not a liberal. So sometimes you just have to accept the things you cannot change.....
Well what is the alternative? Tammy Duckworth. She is not a conservative Democrat like Glenn Poshard. She is an extreme leftist using her military record to gain sympathy among swing voters and apparently people on Freerepublic unfortunately.
Illinois is not as liberal state as it is Democratic- but no one has been able to tap into that yet unfortunately. My guess is there is a lot of downstate rural conservative voters who vote Democrat out of habit- thinking the D party is the party of Kennedy still.
It's ironic Kirk's opponent this time using the same kind of tactics he uses to get elected.
In 2010, anyone who questioned Kirk's leftist record would be slammed by Kirk and his supporters with "but...but... Mark Kirk SERVED our county in Iraq! He risked HIS LIFE for us! Did YOU wear the uniform? How DARE you QUESTION his patriotism! We need to support OUR veterans like Kirk! You oughta be ASHAMED!!!"
I agree, but no one has provided a clear alternative. I did my part—I voted against him in the primary in 2010 and I voted libertarian in his election in November.
But like I said—he is slightly better than Duckworth and I am willing to hope that on some issues such as Supreme Court he will support Trump’s nominees.
I will say again in his defense. Despite being a RINO-—he has not been a media whore in attacking conservatism such as John McCain did during the Bush years.
Bttt
The dems are itching to get this woman in the Senate. I expect her to get a primetime speaking gig at the convention.
The unspoken implication every time she’s in front of the camera is “Those evil Republican bastards stole my legs!”.
She part Asian or something as well, another box to check.
