I fear this would trigger an armed insurrection.

Not exactly why the Founding Fathers put the electoral college into the Constitution.

BTW, yesterday Mark Levin gave a nice little lecture on how the Republicans brokered also-ran Lincoln into the party’s candidate.

How did that turn out for the country?

Because the smaller states weren’t sure they wanted to join to begin with. It was a failsafe against Boston and Philadelphia being all that mattered.

Lincoln, the crony capitalist for the war mongering North, baited the South into a war which killed hundreds of thousands of people. Slavery would have ended eventually without all the violence & chaos.

Just sayin'

They created the Electoral College because in 1787, most people didn't have cable TV and nobody had dependable internet connections.

In 2000, after Gore failed to steal the Florida electoral votes, some Democrats were hoping to flip a few of the Bush electors--it wouldn't have taken many to reverse the outcome of the election and give it to Gore.

Because without the Electoral College, as few as 9 states could elect the president.

The framers of the Constitution considered a number of very different alternatives before settling on the electoral college.

At the time, communications were slow and most political leaders were little known outside their home state, with a few exceptions such as George Washington. They probably expected the electors to vote for someone they knew from their own state (which is why they put in the requirement that at least one of the men they voted for had to be from another state), and anticipated that the House of Representatives would frequently have to select from the top three candidates--which happened only once (1824).
