Its hidden there in plain sight, even if it hasnt happened since the election of 1825: The people will not pick the next president, Congress will.
We wrote about this last week on Medium, and now the story is beginning to flesh out.
Politico reports that leading conservatives will meet on Thursday to plot out a third-party spoiler plan to beat presumed nominee Donald Trump.
With Marco Rubio suspending his campaign after losing the Florida primary and it is beginning to appear he will reverse his previous words to support a nominee Trump.
Because there will be a third party candidate and their name will likely be Mitt with a Kasich or a Rubio on the same ticket.

When the electoral college cannot elect a President because no one has the required 270 electoral votes, the election then goes to the House of Representatives, as per the 12th Amendment. It states as follows...
The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice. And if the House of Representatives shall not choose a President whenever the right of choice shall devolve upon them, before the fourth day of March next following, then the Vice-President shall act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President
So....is this a probable scenario, or just a bunch of hogwash?
Hey Adam!
Paul made it pretty clear he’s going to remain neutral in this, despite all of the mind-readers around.
It won’t work, because the “Mitt” ticket would have to get more votes in some states than either the Hillary!/Castro or Trump/whoever tickets, and that is unlikely to happen. What is more likely to happen is that the “Mitt” and Trump tickets would split the anti-Hillary! vote, getting Hillary! elected with less than 50% of the vote, as her husband did in 1992. It would also be the end of the GOP, and the end of America, because after Hillary!, the only way America could be made great again would be via a coup and/or an imperial dictatorship.
First, it was the Washington Post article suggesting that the state legislatures use their constitutional authority to select a slate of Electors to the Electoral College that would not vote for Trump.
This is the second article, suggesting that the House of Representatives will stop Trump.
The panic is everywhere.
The Vice-Presidency is starting to look pretty important.
Doubtful. Where could Mitt win? Would he even campaign? Did he actually campaign last time?
It's a good bet there's an ex-Governor out there somewhere who's thinking about making a run. But Mitt is a little too retired to actually mount a campaign.
Still, Adlai Stevenson seemed to want the presidency more each time he ran. As his chances of actually winning decreased, his hunger for the office increased.
Doubt he can find a candidate who can beat Trump.
Highly unlikely a third party party candidate wins a state.is a non issue
Eddie Munster?
Rezlly?
This crap is just perpetuating the unfounded hysteria.
Trump will get the nomination clear and will go to the general election. Simple as that, you can already see the elites caving. As for the Cruzers, with all due respect, he isn’t going to get enough delegates.
I went Cruz, but after just now seeing the Skank and her lies on tv, I’m good with Trump just the same.
Much ado about nothing, purely theater.
No, he folded like a cheap camera, pulled his punches and took a dive (I like metaphors).
If the GOPe is successful in wrecking Trump’s primary campaign or pulls a fast one at the convention to bypass the will of the primary voters they will have a voter turnout on November 8 of less than 50 million.
Do they really think Trump voters will show up on election day to vote for someone like Ryan or Kasich?
Do they think a candidate like that will pull in blue collar “Reagan” democrats as Trump will?
No - If the GOP kills the Trump bid for the nomination Hillary will win the presidency in a landslide.
Most of the millions of Trump voters who stay home will be in states that generally vote republican or swing states that republicans need.
Look at the Trump landslide in Florida two days ago and imagine what will happen there if the GOPe turns Trump away.
And just the loss of Florida would be enough to hand the election to Hillary but republicans will lose many other states as well.
I am glad that the writers of the Constitution had the foresight to come up with a plan to address this situation. I hope and pray it isn’t needed this election.
And not only that; wouldn’t he need to win 8 states as well? Are not the rules as now written ‘must win 8 states’? Or am i dreaming numbers here?
The party seems to be very picky about who is invited. I don’t believe this would be a party one would wish to attend.
RSVP - Not available at that time. NO
Isn’t it too late to get a third party candidate on the ballot?
I heard Roger Stone on a Boston conservative talk radio show a few hours ago, and he said that in Texas, they would have to be gathering signatures NOW for a third party bid.
Paul Ryan won’t pick his nose let alone the next Republican candidate. If he does, the GOP will go the way of the Wigs.

There is a simple but major problem with all these various “beat Trump” scenarios from the GOPe donors and their running dogs in Congress. And that is that the GOPe is made up of cowards. I think that most of it is just a lot of hot air. In the end the donors will realize that they will have to cut deals with Trump and that even with a GOPe 3rd Party candidate it is possible he could win. And they will NOT want to be cut out in that case.
It’s hogwash.
It’s exciting hogwash though.
Especially to the liberal media.
If the Republicans nominate a third party candidate, Hillary wins with 40-45% of the vote and there is a blowout in the electoral college-she get 400 electoral votes at a minimum.
Just study the 1912 presidential race when Roosevelt and Taft split the Republican vote or 1992 when Perot took a lot more votes away from George W. Bush than Bill Clinton.
