Neil (and Jeb) are snakes and everyone knows it. However it has to be acknowledged by even the staunchest supporters of Cruz that he is still a relative neophyte to playing the political game. He's good, but he's far from being a master.

To Cruz, it must have seemed like serendipity when suddenly the GOP establishment types came to his side, saying all the right things, Cruz must have thought that they were all unified in a solitary goal which was to stop Trump, but Cruz had no idea that he was being set up just like Carlo Rizzi in 'The Godfather' (Michael's brother-in-law), Michael told Carlo that he was sending him to Vegas, but once Carlo was in the front seat of the car, Clemenza says 'hello Carlo' and the garrote came around Carlo's neck, and he was quickly dead meat.

That is regretfully what is happening to Cruz in slow motion, we are witnessing him being symbolically whacked by the very people he chose to trust with his political future.
