Colorado Loss Reveals Chaotic, Overwhelmed Trump Campaign

Colorado is not going well for Donald Trump.

After a shake-up at the top this week in which Trump empowered Paul Manafort to manage the campaign's troubled delegate operation, Sen. Ted Cruz swept a third straight Congressional District convention Thursday night. All three delegates selected were listed on a slate put forward by the Cruz campaign.

Trump aides concede that Colorado is not a promising state, but the level of disorganization at Thursday's event suggested problems that ran deeper than the top-line results.

Addressing the audience, Trump's new Colorado state director Patrick Davis told supporters to vote for the three pro-Trump delegate candidates on a glossy brochure the campaign distributed.

"Look for them on the back when you vote Donald Trump!" Davis said. "He's going to make America great again!"

There was only one problem: Two of the three names weren't listed on the ballot.

"That's a good question," Davis told reporters after his speech when asked why they were left off.

There were, however, three pro-Trump delegates on the ballot who weren't sanctioned by the campaign. One of them, Cully Marshall, made his case for Trump in a poem.

"He's our only hope against Hillary, that lying crooked witch," Marshall said. "He's going to build that wall and make Hillary El Chapo's personal..." He trailed off.

After some digging, Davis returned with a solution to the mystery of the missing delegates. One of the delegates had failed to pay the necessary fee to get on the ballot. He assumed the other was left off for similar reasons.

"Administrative error," he said.

He may win, but there’s an underlying problem here that can’t be denied. Trump has a hard time resonating with Republican voters in the Great Plains and Mountain states. As a media-driven jackass from New York with a big mouth (and I use this term endearingly), I suspect his appeal is very limited outside urban areas.

The intellectual depth of Trump supporters is astounding.

Same can be said for Ted. The south thinks he is a shyster. He is a slimy lying politician with no vision.

No matter how times the media repeats the lie, or whatever goofy adjectives they stick in their headlines ("chaotic"), doesn't make it true.

Trump is well ahead, and New York is up next. Cruz is in last place in New York and Maryland, and probably DE/CT/RI too. Some "surge" they keep trying tell us exists.

Love him or hate him, support his candidacy or not at all, it’s clear that the media are employing the usual self-fulfilling prophecy of a so-called campaign disaster...despite the fact the object of their scorn has been the clear GOP leader for months.

It also bears repeating that the Dem ‘leader’ can’t beat back the tomato can her DNC cronies hand-picked for her. But Sanders is like a wino in the park who’s been babbling for 20 years and is delighted to find he suddenly has an audience so he will go off script and take proper shots at Hillary.

It also bears repating that if Jeb Bush had a fraction of Trump’s delegate count we would already be buried in stories of inevitability, preumptive nominee, momentum, consensus, electability, etc.

The gutter press are bad enough when they do the Dems’ bidding. When they do the work of the GOP establishment they are even worse.

In the great state of CO here, and both my son and I are very turned off by Cruz. I used to think pretty highly of him. But the things that have occurred in this campaign, those he has chosen to surround himself with (as my son says: stabby the clown), the way his campaign behaves. And that Cruz is just playing the game, and that is ok...

No, it isn’t. This is exactly what we are fed up with in our politicians. Yet I see those on FR celebrating when this so called principled man does exactly the same things and associates himself with exactly the same people that we are disgusted by. Ick.

Trump is obviously naive, he thought people were going to vote in their nominee, not party hacks. Welcome to the GOP Mr. Trump

Trump isn’t losing the nomination, the GOPee, his competition and the media are stealing it from him.

Yes, but doesn’t that description apply to almost every politician in the South — regardless of political affiliation?

The title of the article isn’t fair to Trump. His problem in CO is not his ground game. It’s that the folks who pledge to vote for Trump don’t get elected. The support for Cruz is pretty high here in CO. You could ground game them over and over and they would still vote for Cruz.

We've seen slick suited guys from the big cities who promised the moon and stars before. That show doesn't play well in smaller venues.

Of course. Cruz is a POLITICIAN, backed by and beholden to the Establishment. He knows the sneaky things he can do to thwart the will of the people.

Trump is just an ordinary guy, a successful businessman.

I don’t argue with Cruzbots.

Waste of time arguing with indoctrinated believers.

Trying to censor all but pro Trump propaganda eh?

Better get used to it as Trumps getting the 1237 to win is looking less likely by the day.

I guess that would explain the otherwise inexplicable, the habit of fairly conservative folks to elect the likes of Tom Daschle, Max Baucus, and Chuck Hagel to the Senate.

You'll understand if I don't genuflect before their 'wisdom.'
