I believe the US has defense obligations with Taiwan. The Ukraine is a former Soviet country. The Russians would tolerate Ukraine joining NATO or EU as much as the US would have tolerated Mexico or Canada joining the Warsaw Pact. Must be that 300 miles from Moscow thing.

What was Ukraine before it was a Soviet "republic?" (the Soviet's term). Why are you starting the clock there?
