Texting on mobile devices while driving is a growing "global killer" and not enough attention is being paid to the dangers of distracted drivers, Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on Friday.
The U.N. General Assembly said on Friday it had asked the secretary general to consider establishing a voluntarily funded Road Safety Trust Fund to support efforts to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from traffic accidents. Road crashes kill more than 1.25 million people and injure as many as 50 million people a year globally, according to the world body.
It has urged countries to do more to establish road safety policies and vehicle safety regulations and set a goal of cutting worldwide traffic deaths in half by 2020.
"Texting while driving is a global killer one that disproportionately affects our young people," Power said in remarks delivered at the United Nations.

lol!!
I heard North Koreans and Somalians are crashing into each other left and right while texting in their Ferraris.
Really? Isn’t this an issue for nations to handle on their own? What does this have to do with advancing world peace?
Well, I’m sure the easiest solution is to make autos with a feature that automatically suspends your phones texting capabilities once the engine is started. Or maybe an accelerometer built into the phones that disable the texting when you exceed 3 mph? We gotta control these texters at all costs.
No problem Samantha. Right after the U.S. puts boots on the ground in Israel.
(One of her previously mentioned desires.)
Unless, you are texting about anthropomorphic climate change.
“Why would the UN get involved in something like this? Maybe Powers needs to go back and read the UN charter.”
Can you say, “New World Order,” or “Globalism”?
If some people cannot drive while talking/texting on a cell phone then they should never be allowed behind the wheel of a car, anyway.
Nice to see the UN has its priorities right
These people are a joke. A high school president would not make more innane statements
Good plan, but accelerometers don’t respond to constant velocities (speed as such). The GPS sensor would be better for that.
Tee efing UN?
Yeah, you’re correct, acceleration kicks them off not constant velocity. And, of course there’s always turning off your gps in your phone.
Most of the people in the world don’t even have a car. The UN is useless.
You sure are giving them a boost calling them useless. LOL!
Well...I always try to be “nice”.
