“They are hollowing out their American workforce”

How many of the 12,000 are here in America?

Having had three tours thru Intel ...
*************
Makes me glad my last two pc purchases were AMD powered ,, I’d rather have Taiwan Semi get the work... I was IT from the late 70’s onward and my kids are in STEM feeder classes ... but I will advise them to go in other directions .. I see the only value (in the US for a US citizen) of getting a STEM education is that it keeps them out of the really worthless classes...

Not all workers are interchangeable.

Intel might have laid off 12,000 janitors while hiring foreign engineers.

Intel might have laid off 12,000 engineers while hiring skilled foreign assembly workers.

Intel might have laid off 12,000 skilled assembly workers while hiring foreign sales professionals.

Intel might have laid off 12,000 expensive Americans while hiring cheap foreign workers.

My money is on the last option, but I would like to know the details.

The bag limit for H1Bs was reached in 5 days this federal fiscal year.

And Intel announced the layoffs the same day. They must have made their quota...

I know with some of the Asians imported by the financial sector here in the NYC metro area the salaries are probably 75% of the Americans’ wages - but they are forced to work 150% of the hours. Trafficking these coolies isn’t just to suppress wages; it is also an end-run around hard-fought labor reforms that gave Americans nights and weekends off.

Along the NY/NJ border were iron mining communities where in the 19th century people slaved away six and a half days per week (Sunday afternoons were off) for little more than room and board; when the mines closed the workers fled with what they could carry because many were in debt to the “company store”. We are returning to those dark days; workers live in housing they will never own, driving cars they lease, and when they die the next worker will move right into their apartment and vehicle. There will be nothing to pass along, which is acceptable to some because there are no heirs anyway. At least the iron miners could raise families...

The only pushes I see for STEM workers are geared towards minorities and women; apparently our overlords have decided that whatever remaining STEM jobs should be awarded to them. Even with the big push they won’t get takers; both groups have been getting a taste of the “white man’s burden” for a few years now, and they ain’t liking it...

***** Makes me glad my last two pc purchases were AMD powered *****

I’ve had 2 AMD’s. The last 3 have been Intel. Last November I built my wife’s computer around the i7-4790K. When I removed the chip from the packaging, it said Viet Nam.

The i7 is a beast... I personally don’t see the value in the high end processors as I’m not a gamer,, if I was to buy a killer machine it’d be a used server with dual xeon’s big memory and raid1 ,, possibly for bitcoin mining. I have no problem with VietNam or most of the SE Asian countries except for the thieving Chinese... even the Muslims in the area are generally somewhat peaceful as they control their own areas..

“Companies would rather hire foreigners at a lower wage.”

That’s the bottom line. Even if there was an abundance of qualified American citizens to fill the needs of these companies, they’d still be crying for more foreign workers due to their willingness to work for so much less than citizens with a costly ‘education’ to pay off.

In 2013, the company’s government affairs managers complained that Intel simply can’t find enough homegrown workers in technical fields to meet its needs at the wages being offered.

Fixed.
