Many conservatives, including me, thought nothing but the best about Dr. Ben Carson's run for the White House...until now. Recently, Dr. Carson has suggested that we need to get rid of the Electoral College because it disregards the "will of the people." Underlying this proposal is the idea that pure, national democracy is the best form of government.
Dr. Carson displayed shocking ignorance of American history when he told Fox News: "When the Electoral College was put in place, a lot of people did not know what was going on. They had no idea who was running or what the situation was. That has changed significantly." The good doctor is wrong on every count.
The purpose of the Electoral College was as much to preserve the power of the sovereign states from the national government as anything else. Presidential electors for each of the first nine elections were chosen by state legislatures, a constitutional power state legislatures still retain but have chosen to defer to the people. There has never been a popular vote for president, which Dr. Carson doubtless knows, but there was no popular vote for presidential electors until 1824.
This allowed states, which had created the Constitution by acquiescing power to a national government, to retain significant control over that government by effectively choosing the president and by actually choosing the Senate. The will of the people was to be expressed through the sovereign states and not by a national vote.
The Electoral College, like the Senate, precisely because it rejected the idea of "one man, one vote," protected the interests of the smaller states by removing the power of the larger states to overwhelm the smaller's interests. This is what was known as the Great Compromise in the Constitutional Convention.

I’ve heard worse — like global catastrophe because of climate change caused by my driving a regular automobile and turning my air con full blast during a 100 degree summer day.
This ought to be an interesting thread as it could expose a good deal of hypocrisy.
I’m all for it, the electoral college is screwing us, large cities dominate and they’re totally liberal, 95% of the country is being ruled by big city liberals from big crappy states like California, chuck the stupid college and let’s have a true democracy, mob rule, I’ll take that over this freaking mess we have now.

So, the American System is rigged when Mississippi ( population 3 million ) has the same number of Senators as New York or California?

without the electoral college The Northeast, CA and Chicago will elect out presidents. The rest of us will be spectators.
Speaking of New York and California – the system Carson favors would let the Northeast and California decide every presidential election.
Given recent political events, I could now see it happening.

We are slouching towards Direct Democracy. These party leaders, by the way they’re SCROOOOOOING with Bernie and Trump, will only accelerate the process.
Interesting, this is actually a step towards the OWO, that globalist are working for. But Ben Carson can something like this and he is a hero, If Cruz said something similar, it would be everywhere as proof of his being a globalist.

Manhattan itself has more population than North and South Dakota combined. Throw in all 5 boroughs and NY city is roughly equivalent to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and half of Minnesota combined!
While straight number democracy may have it’s place, it certainly is not for the Presidential race.
Small states need a voice too, and the electoral system gives them a voice.

This is NOT fair. 3-EV states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming) are voterless! Let the people vote! (California, Texas, New York, Floriduh).
This is troubling that Dr. Carson “thinks” like this. The problem has been our so-called “educational” system and media/”books”, which does not “educate”-—just brainwashes.
He is “smart” in areas——but it is compartmentalized-—as ALL our education is designed to be (isolate in area, so you remain incompetent in others-—to “see” all the corruption in other areas. The operant conditioning makes it so even a brilliant person will be incapable of “seeing the forest” because of a few trees. He is easily controlled by the State-—it is how doctors are used to poison our children even if they are “smart”. (And they ARE destroying our children with insane “vaccines”-—which is destroying a generation of children—esp. the boys at a 3:1 rate. (Vaxxed-—I did a researched paper on Wakefield-—he is a truth sayer to an evil insidious “power” exactly the way Sen. Joseph McCarthy was——the system lied and destroyed each man (as much as they could).
Classical Education (Christian) gave you a well-rounded, deep understanding of the views of Locke, Montesquieu, Smith, Reid and the Bible so that you could understand our US System of government and philosophy——now, the philosophy is LOST-—not even covered for over 80 years—and when it is-—it is through a Marxist/Freudian Lens.
Now, Carson “sees” much more than others-—but the indoctrination has been intense EVERYWHERE for three generations....so his distorted mind will take a while to straighten out with the “Truth”. Ben Carson is able to use his mind though-—unlike so many of the other people destroyed by skools and drugged to incompetence. He can “learn” and evolve-—to more truth. (The Truth will set us Free).
