Kinda funny this happened in Austin, of all places.
Not a hoax. Hoaxes are generally harmless pranks with a humorous intent. This is attempted extortion.
Perhaps the gayest city in the nation. During my visits to Austin (I have family there), I always go to Whole Foods to shop, and see the oddest assortment of gay freaks outside. There's a mini-mall shopping strip across the street and there are lesbians with clipboards pushing abortion and gay rights petitions. I always make it a point to yell at them. Looks much like Berkeley.
