Yeah, me too. A lot of those SS guys had been in the Party since before Hitler took over Germany, and the younger ones had been in the Hitler Youth since they were 10 years old, which was like pre-military training. Kinda like the Boy Scouts with guns and attitude.
The Waffen-SS fielded about 40 combat divisions during the war. About a dozen of them were written off as “annihilated on the Russian Front.” Most of the SS taken prisoner by the Russians never made it back to Germany.
