The odds of landing affordable housing in NYC are 1,000 to 1

Odd, then, that the vacancy rate is so low.

Somebody's doing the affording...

I wonder what the population of NYC would be without market manipulation such as rent control and gov-subsidized housing.

Would it go down, because fewer could afford it so the poorer would leave, or would it go up because as the poor left, wealthier would move in? Would this help reduce crime as well?

My grandfather who is 89 and partially disabled, and has to scrape by on a starvation SS check, can’t get on Section 8 here in my Tx city near the border. There are 3,000 on the waiting list, and it’s closed.

He lives in a senior apt project that is supposed to charge seniors rent according to their income, but they take over half of his check. By the time he pays utilities and the necessary supplementary health insurance, he has only a few dollars left.
If we didn’t help him, he’d go hungry.

At least 95% of the residents are Hispanic and on section 8., and he says many many have told him (those who can speak English) that they pay like $126.00 or less per mo. in rent. They force my grandfather to pay almost $500.00 in rent.
(other similar senior ‘help’ projects are no different)

There’s even weekly classes there at my grandfather’s apts to teach Hispanics how to speak English!!
I suspect many- if not most residents are illegal ‘immigrants’- or former ‘welfare queens’ who never worked a day in their lives, but stayed home popping out illegitimate kids.

He worked hard all his life, never even thought about welfare of any kind and was severely wounded while serving his country in the army.

Thanks, America!
But that’s alright, keep doling out trillions to illegal invaders and countries who hate us.

Has always been thus. They scan the obituary column like vultures, waiting for someone in a rent controlled apartment to die.

The odds of landing an affordable apartment through the city’s Housing Connect website have gotten so long, they’re now at about 1,000 to 1, officials said Wednesday.

The writer wrote the opposite of what he probably thinks he wrote. He should have used "odds against" rather than "odds of."

“Affordable” is a relative term.
