To be honest, John Mabus has named about 40 US Navy Ships with the USS designation, and a good 20 or so support ships with the USNS (US Naval Ship), non-combat ships.

A large majority have little issue. Many named for heroes and medal of honor recipients. One for LBJ, who though was democrat and liberal, was also a US Navy veteran.

But he has gone out of his way in several instances to name ships for uber-liberal icons, or their causes:

USS Car Levin is a new Arleigh Burke destroyer being named for a liberal Michigan Democrat.,

USNS Ceaser Chavez is a Lewis and Clark class replenishment ship named for a ultra-liberal leftists and union organizer, who plainly stated he hated the US Navy after his discharge from the same. Those ships, everyone of them were named for famous explorers except that one.

USNS John Lewis is the first in class of a new replenishment oiler, which means they will all be known as the John Lewis class, named for a liberal democrat activist. US Navy policy called for them to be named after Rivers or individuals instrumental in maritime production, but Mabus changed the policy and they will all be named for civil rights activists instead.

USS John Murtha, a San Antonio Class Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Amphibious assault ship, named for this liberal democrat. All other ships in the class were named either for Cities, or a park or county.

USS Gabriella Gifford, an Independence Littoral Combat Ship, which Mabus named for the Democrat congresswoman who was shot in 2011. All of the others are named for American cities.

So, Mabus chang3es the rules and conventions when it suits him, and almost every time he has done that (which in truth are a minority of the ships he has named) it has been for some liberal cause or person.
