Trump Campaign Announces Expanded Role For Paul Manafort
ABC News ^ | May 19, 2016 | John Santucci

Donald Trump will change the role for one of his campaign’s top advisors, ABC News has learned.

Sources within the campaign said that Trump will name Paul Manafort to the new role of Campaign Chairman and Chief Strategist...

Manafort’s new role is a natural growth of the campaign as they begin to build a team ready for the general election, according to the sources. The role is an obvious promotion for Manafort, but sources stressed it should not be seen as a demotion for campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

Campaign spokesperson Hope Hicks confirmed the move, adding that Lewandowski will, “continue overseeing day to day operations and will work with Manafort on political strategy and communications, among other things, through the general election."

Paul Manafort reminds me so much of the old movie producer Robert Evans.

In 1985, Manafort accepted $600,000 yearly from Jonas Savimbi, the Maoist leader of the Angolan rebel group UNITA, to refurbish his image in Washington and secure financial support.

Why, Donald?

Why not a non-apologist right-wing conservative, like, say, Pat Buchanan, or a Libertarian like Greg Gutfeld?

OK, so in your successful run for the Republican Nomination you used Pat Buchanan and Greg Gutfeld, and that worked out how?

Are you on active duty?

I was in Korea. Who in hell would you name?

How about a recycled Bush I or Bush II ideologue?

I trust both of these patriots.

Name your candidates!

Manafort was the key to Trump building a true political organization - he did not have one early in the process and it hampered him for a period. Now he has a high-functioning political team and the results are obvious. The Republican Party is coalescing and Trump has already caught and passed Hillary like Secretariat pulling away along the Belmont backstretch.

Manafort was brilliant move by Trump and the results prove it. He may be entirely non-ideological...but ideology is for losers today when what we need is America-first pragmatism.

Hey there genius. Manafort was part of Reagan’s campaign in ‘80.

Nice wrap on Manafort.......guy proved he’s worth his weight in gold when Trump had scummy Ted bird-dogging him.

At the time, Manafort said, “Ted is about to hit a rough patch.”

And, sure enough, he did.

“Rough patch”. I love it. Manafort’s outward demeanor is definitely low key, but he apparently carries a big stick and gets the job done.

Another Best of Manafort: “Cruz’s massive NE primaries losses hammered the nails into his coffin; Indiana will show him he’s in it.”

Expanding the team is great. Corey’s has a great deal of energy and enthusiasm and was awesome putting together enormous rallies and organizing the campaign movement. He can continue with that role during the general campaign because the rallies are all going to be huge. Corey will continue to do a fantastic job he has been doing and will develop more as the race moves along.

Paul Manafort is a well seasoned and brilliant strategist. It is essential to have him fully on board to help Trump maneuver his way through the constant attacks that he will face through November. Manafort exudes class and style and raises the campaign level far above the Clintons and Trump’s past opponents. He handles the MSM interview attacks with complete composure and command. He laughs and toys with them, like it’s a game. He is the type of man that Trump needs to guide him safely thru the shark infested waters. Yea Paul, we’re counting on him.

Not really.

I have always been fond of Pat ever since I met him in D.C. at old St. Mary’s Church. I’ve read all his books and I believe he would have made an excellent president.

As far as Greg is concerned, he says he’s a Libertarian, but he’s actually an acerbic patriot.

Who, pray tell, would you suggest as a plotter for Donald?

Gutfeld despises Trump and whips out whiny cuck NRO-esque ‘principled conservative’ talking points from time to time. He’s functionally lobotomized himself from any grasp on reality.

I’m Libertarian too, but it’s obvious to me that Trump is the best thing that’s happened to this country in generations.

In 1985, the year you cited for Manafort, Savimbi as head of the anti-communist UNITA was fighting against the Soviet backed MPLA in Angola. Savimbi was backed by the USA in the Reagan years.

Savimbi had been trained in guerilla tactics in China in the late 1960's.

He had even worked for Portugal in the post colonial years.

Jonas Savimbi

As the MPLA was supported by the Soviet bloc since 1974, and declared itself Marxist-Leninist in 1977, Savimbi renounced his earlier Maoist leanings and contacts with China, presenting on the international scene as a protagonist of anti-communism. The war between the MPLA and UNITA, whatever its internal reasons and dynamics, thus became a sub-plot to the Cold War, with both Moscow and Washington viewing the conflict as important to the global balance of power.[10]

In 1985, with the backing of the Reagan administration, Jack Abramoff and other U.S. conservatives organized the Democratic International in Savimbi's base in Jamba, in Cuando Cubango Province in southeastern Angola.[10]

Savimbi's U.S.-based supporters ultimately proved successful in convincing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to channel covert weapons and recruit guerrillas for Savimbi's war against Angola's Marxist government, which greatly intensified and prolonged the conflict. During a visit to Washington, D.C. in 1986, Reagan invited Savimbi to meet with him at the White House. Following the meeting, Reagan spoke of UNITA winning "a victory that electrifies the world."[11]

Two years later, with the Angolan Civil War intensifying, Savimbi returned to Washington, where he was filled with gratitude and praise for the Heritage Foundation's work on UNITA's behalf. "When we come to the Heritage Foundation", Savimbi said during a June 30, 1988 speech at the foundation, "it is like coming back home. We know that our success here in Washington in repealing the Clark Amendment and obtaining American assistance for our cause is very much associated with your efforts. This foundation has been a source of great support. The UNITA leadership knows this, and it is also known in Angola."[11]
