I agree. I still get chills watching that race. It doesn’t get old.

What I can’t remember anymore is if I watched the CBS broadcast of the race live, although I suspect I did because of the buildup to the potential Triple Crown.

In the Derby Secretariat ran each successive quarter mile faster than the one before it, setting the record that still stands. And poor old Sham likely holds the second fastest time.

I do remember watching it on TV, I was 16...I remember a line from the announcer near the end when Ron Turcotte turned and looked back, and it was “Sham is tiring, looks like they’ll catch him today”. I’ve never heard that line in the movie, or the clips I’ve seen since. Sham was burned up early trying to stay with Secretariat and he couldn’t go the last 3/8 at all. He would likely have showed a bit better had he not tried to stay close when the pace was other-worldly.
