The Russians didn’t think he was joking at all. They all had heart palpitations.
The independent senator has jumped through a lot of hoops to run as a Democrat; state level shenanigans are a far cry from approving or even accepting a debate between Bernie and Trump. It would not surprise me if they are extremely blunt to the Bernie campaign: Do this, and you won't even be allowed in the door at the DNC.
If you have better ideas than your opponent
Or if he knew the difference between LOSE and LOOSE he might be able to think a little better.

I’m not a Trump fan, but I thought the idea of him debating Bernie was a stroke of genius. It bumps up Bernie in his race against she who will not be named, and at the same time drives swwnbn into absolute and complete irrelevancy. The campaign may well be laughing it off as a joke for the moment, but I still think the fundamental drivers for this are amazingly strong.
Actually Trump should debate him and be NICE to him so he can pick up his supporters in November.

If Bernie or a moderator attacks Trump with something like “America doesn’t need a President (Trump) that insults women, minorities, immigrants and handicapped people and encourages violence”,
Trump should respond with “I completely agree with Senator Sanders that Hillary Clinton is crooked, and that she is completely owned by Wall Street bankers and K Street lobbyists”.
Rinse and repeat.
Bernie is reported to have tweeted, “Game On!”

In front of a raucous crowd. It would give Trump an entre into the Millenials. They will see he is not a sexist pig.
Another dumb article from Time. No candidates debate. What are now called debates are controlled press conference with sound bites from each candidate. They are as vapid is most of the rest of television programming.
I view it as a job interview with Bernie’s supporters.
Trump plays his cards right, and he could increase the Bern crossovers by a few percentage points.
