The mosquito population can be drastically reduced by simply using genetic engineering to breed sterile male mosquitoes and release them into the environment so when the mosquitoes bred there will be no offspring. This has worked well in the Cayman Islands but due to phobias against GMOs it was stopped from being used in the Florida Keys where aerial spraying of pesticides are used to control mosquitoes.

Go figure.

This program was used successfully years ago in the U.S. for the screw worm flies that were harming livestock. The USDA released sterile flies all over the South and the South West and I think there was even a program in Mexico.
