I was young, fresh out of college and not prepared to wait indefinitely until they made a decision when I had other job offers in hand. A few years later, they invited me to reapply and I did, but this time it was a no. Don’t know if it was the background check, conservative activism or whatever and, of course, they wouldn’t say. I can only guess.
I think it depends on how special. About 90% of the CIA Employees are based in Langley. I’m guessing the straight clerical type positions don’t require that level of clearance. The Valarie Plame style desk jockeys on up probably do.
