You might consider the possibility that his common sense, somewhat conservative attitudes contributed to his career stalling out. Unless you're already too big of a star to intimidate or blackball, e.g. a Tom Selleck or Mel Gibson, the Hollywood conservative blacklist system is very real. A lot of doors will still be closed to you unless you're a big name with box-office drawing power too good to ignore.
