Can someone explain why 2/3rds of some videos can’t be watched...It’s more than a little Irritating.

If you’re referring to the left and right thirds being blurred out I’ve noticed this is a thing that video sites do when the person filming on their smartphone has it oriented vertically instead of horizontally.

The alternative is the left and right thirds are blacked out to fit the vertically oriented video into the horizontally oriented media player window.

As a rule, I always hold my camera horizontally when I shoot video. I know that ultimately I’m going to watch it on a TV and I’d like the entire screen to show video.

You are seeing the whole video. Since the phone video format ratio is not standard, the media geniuses decided to take parts of the left and right of the video, blur them, and use them as filler. It would be less disorienting if they just filled in with black

If you look at the blurred parts, you can see they are part of the original video.
