380 isn't my favorite but I own 2 as they are perfect for concealed carry and plenty effective enough at "normal" self-defense distances (for one who knows how to shoot) with the Critical Defense rounds.
My wife carries a 9mm in her purse so she "outguns" me on a daily basis....
Back to the story - going with weapons that use the ammo readily available at Walmart isn't a bad idea, but stocking up on ammo for the weapons you have is a better idea.
A pistol for close work
.22 bolt action for hunting small critters
.30 rifle for hunting big critters
.223 cal or 7.62mm with large capacity mags for keeping critters off the block
12 gauge shot gun for keeping critters off the porch.
Buy ammo every chance you get - I do cash at gun shows.
I like the very small and light weight Sig .380.
Very concealable.
I've recently discovered the Browning 1911-380. Been difficult to find at gunstores, but finally found one to "heft". Smaller version of the full sized 1911 (15% smaller). The 7.5" length makes it not as concealable, but the sucker is light as a feather...and pretty. There's also a slightly shorter compact version.
One of these days maybe...
