Christie vetoes $17M in welfare, women's health programs 'to protect taxpayers'

Gov. Chris Christie rejected legislation Thursday that would have raised monthly welfare benefits for the first time in 30 years, and would have restored $7.5 million in grants for women's clinics which he eliminated when he first took office in 2010.

In veto statements released just before 10 p.m. — two hours before the start of the new fiscal year — the governor said his actions "protected taxpayers" from the "irresponsible" spending by the Democrats who control the Legislature.

"Unfortunately, the Legislature has continued its annual ritual of attempting to pass additional unbudgeted spending for selected interests," according to Christie's veto statement.

I agree. At a national level, Christie may be to the left on some issues and so people who are comparing him to Ted Cruz or some other more consistent conservative label him liberal. Using that label is unfair and a lot of the criticism of Christie is unfair. He has consistently tried to reduce costs in Blue New Jersey. For New Jersey, he is definitely conservative. He achieved a lot in taking on the teachers unions and the crazy New Jersey state and county pension system. For that, I will always admire him.

Go join the RAT team.

If I did that I have to shill for liberals. Which is against my better judgement. And my principles.

“Well, for the first time in my life I have something in common with liberals and public sector leach unions.”

Then you might want to consider your misinformation that guides your opinion; there is a reason Christie has those enemies -and the taxpaying supporters that have re-elected him.

Christie is the best we could hope for in NJ; the alternative is unthinkable. He has tried to slow the death spiral of the state (unsuccessfully), but at least he identifies the problem. He is Tea Party through and through...
