SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed by his father at a Florida gun range.

A statement from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says Brumby tried to remove the shell with his right hand, which was holding the gun and accidentally fired the gun at his son, who was standing directly behind him.

Wow..

Does he have a left hand? If I’m holding a gun in my right hand then I don’t multitask with my right hand.

This story may be BS.

I’ve had hot brass fly in a few unexpected places over the years. Did a few odd gyrations even.

I would assume the father is right handed and the usual reaction is to use the right hand to go for the hot brass - which takes the finger off the trigger.

A lefty would do the same in reverse.

I feel for the kid and the rest of the family. The Dad? Not a bit.

This is called a “Freak Accident” and, while tragic, is NOT an everyday occurrence at the range. The man’s grief must be excruciating, and will be made worse if the gun-grabbers use him as an “example”.

BTW, I have had hot shell casings fly into my BRA, and I still had the presence of mind to put the gun down on the table facing downrange in order to fish the brass out.

And I am just a novice.

Wrong, If as it seams this was an Accident, Do you not think the mental torture would not be enough? Where is the Intent which would be the purpose of the Jail you ask for?

I have no problem with it being investigated but if there is nothing other than an accident, You Don’t Jail someone for that.

Ya think?
Brought to us by the media that make LYING an Olympic sport and the anti-gun lobby that ALSO lies.

Keep those fingers OFF the trigger except when ready to fire.

Very sad . Son is dead, father will be guilt-ridden,possible family breakup, and gungrabbers using death to further their evil agenda.

Absolutely difficult to believe. I admit to poor planning in having an open collar on the shooting line from time to time, but the discomfort of sharing my shirt with a spent shell casing has never made me fail to keep my gun down range. I am having a very hard time making the angles work in my mind. Worse, why was his son still standing there with a “mad man” waving a gun his direction?
Very sad and clearly not a good outcome, but if dad is this jumpy a chainsaw would probably have produced the same result.

There does not need to be intent for a charge of Involuntary manslaughter.

All there needs to be is reckless behavior.

I’m sure the father will be punishing himself for this for the rest of his life.

An accident is something that could not be prevented.

If you see a coiled up electric cord on the stairs you should move it because it might cause an accident if somebody else trips over it.

If you don’t move it and somebody trips and gets hurt it wasn’t an accident because it could have been prevented by the person not leaving it there or you when you noticed.

In this case it was hot brass. Many, many shooters have had hot brass go unexpected places. But we don’t forget gun safty going after it.

There’s a whole bunch of reasons I don’t like indoor shooting ranges and this is one of them.

But, I’ve stated my reasons before at great length yet indoor shooting ranges still keep opening up. Nobody listens to me. Oh well.

>>BTW, I have had hot shell casings fly into my BRA, and I still had the presence of mind to put the gun down on the table facing downrange in order to fish the brass out.

I’ve had brass go down my shirt and once had a piece of hot brass come down behind my glasses and get stuck between the glasses and my cheek. You may have nerves of steel, but us mortals flinch at that and we instinctively reach with our strong hand...which has a loaded gun in it.

I’ve always had presence of mind to stop myself before I broke the plane of the firing line. Most people do.

But before we start saying that this poor guy is unqualified to handle a gun, ask yourself what test you want to use to check for proper nerves under stress.

Do we want to have to to the local police department so they can hit us with a hot poker to see if we can maintain our composure as proof that we can handle a gun safely when a piece of hot brass goes down our shirt?

Do we want mandatory safety jackets with tight collars when we go to the local range? After all, if it only saves one life is the usual question asked when one of our rights is being eroded.

You mean Stephen J. Brumby may still be alive?
