Newt Gingrich: White Americans ‘Don’t Understand Being Black in America’
The Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | July 8, 2016

Posted on 07/08/2016 9:53:41 AM PDT by Cecily

Never let it be said that Newt Gingrich is predictable.

As the political world waits to see if the former Georgia congressman and U.S. House speaker gets tapped to be Donald Trump’s running mate, Gingrich teamed up with his former Crossfire partner Van Jones to discuss this week’s shootings in Dallas, Baton Rouge and Minnesota.

Speaking on Facebook Live, Gingrich was his typically direct self. But, in this age of polarized politics, whether it be of the electoral or racial variety, Gingrich’s comments were also remarkable. Here is the key quote:

“It took me a long time, and a number of people talking to me through the years to get a sense of this. If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively under-estimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk.”

Being black in America isn’t a blanket. Their are levels under that blanket.

Black Americans . . Those who have taken advantage of the opportunities offered by this country and succeeded just as any other American and reached the highest levels.

African-Americans . . Victims created by the Democrat party for their votes. They believe that the country owes them a good living because many years ago their ancestors came from Arica and they are here. They do not think that the opportunities offered are for them because that would require them to actually take responsibly for their lives and not the welfare agencies. They expect that they are owed housing, medical, phone service, and education all paid for by whitey.

Then there is the rest . . and they are called exactly what they call themselves. They exhibit the same characteristics as above but on steroids.

From four years ago at the Republican Primary South Carolina Debate:

WILLIAMS: Speaker Gingrich, you recently said black Americans should demand jobs, not food stamps. You also said poor kids lack a strong work ethic and proposed having them work as janitors in their schools. Can't you see that this is viewed, at a minimum, as insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans?

GINGRICH: No. I don't see that.
(APPLAUSE)
You know, my daughter, Jackie, who's sitting back there, Jackie Cushman, reminded me that her first job was at First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Georgia, doing janitorial work at 13. And she liked earning the money. She liked learning that if you worked, you got paid. She liked being in charge of her own money, and she thought it was a good start.
I had a young man in New Hampshire who walked up to me. I've written two newsletters now about this topic. I've had over 50 people write me about the jobs they got at 11, 12, 13 years of age. Ran into a young man who started a doughnut company at 11. He's now 16. He has several restaurants that take his doughnuts. His father is thrilled that he's 16 because he can now deliver his own doughnuts.
(LAUGHTER)
What I tried to say — and I think it's fascinating, because Joe Klein reminded me that this started with an article he wrote 20 years ago. New York City pays their janitors an absurd amount of money because of the union. You could take one janitor and hire 30-some kids to work in the school for the price of one janitor, and those 30 kids would be a lot less likely to drop out. They would actually have money in their pocket. They'd learn to show up for work. They could do light janitorial duty. They could work in the cafeteria. They could work in the front office. They could work in the library. They'd be getting money, which is a good thing if you're poor. Only the elites despise earning money.
(APPLAUSE)
WILLIAMS: Well…
(APPLAUSE)
(CROSSTALK)
WILLIAMS: The suggestion that he made was about a lack of work ethic. And I've got to tell you, my e-mail account, my Twitter account has been inundated with people of all races who are asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the poor and racial minorities.
You saw some of this reaction during your visit…
(BOOING)
… to a black church in South Carolina. You saw some of this during your visit to a black church in South Carolina, where a woman asked you why you refer to President Obama as "the food stamp president." It sounds as if you are seeking to belittle people.
(BOOING)
GINGRICH: Well, first of all, Juan, the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history.
(APPLAUSE)
Now, I know among the politically correct, you're not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.
(LAUGHTER)
(APPLAUSE)
Second, you're the one who earlier raised a key point. There's — the area that ought to be I-73 was called by Barack Obama a corridor of shame because of unemployment. Has it improved in three years? No. They haven't built the road. They haven't helped the people. They haven't done anything.
(APPLAUSE)
So…
(APPLAUSE)
BAIER: Finish your thought, Mr. Speaker.

GINGRICH: One last thing.
BAIER: Yes, sir.
GINGRICH: So here's my point. I believe every American of every background has been endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness. And if that makes liberals unhappy, I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job and learn some day to own the job.
(APPLAUSE)<

Much of the current black population is a product of LBJ's Great Society program.

You do not give low-intelligence, ambition- and behaviorally-challenged people the resources to reproduce and achieve a positive result.

The inner-cities are the product of DemonRat policies.

We should probably pay them to not reproduce.

Most black people can barely read and write, let alone even speak proper English. There is a reason why they cannot find suitable employment. They blame whitey for all their problems while doing nothing to educate themselves.

I can affirm that blacks are, 99% of the time, the first kids in a class to act out. They comprise the vast majority of kids wandering the halls cutting class. With a few bright exceptions, they have poor records of turning in homework or projects. They frequently handicap their academic success by having out-of-wedlock babies while teens themselves. As a consequence of their not trying their best to excel academically and social promotion, their writing and computational skills are poorly developed. However, their academic failure is the fault of the teacher, don't you know.

They continue this sort of behavior post high school, excuses having been made for their poor behavior for their whole lives.

And then, they are the first to rail against the white man for lack of opportunity. How about they look in the mirror for that person to blame? I've seen this played out way too many times, from the above-described classroom behavior to the results. I am not impressed.

Yeah and I bet if you were walking in a major city and a group of Blacks were approaching you would feel no sense of dread

And thanks for calling me a name just like a typical left winger does when they can’t refute an argument

Gingrich says “White parents, Gingrich continued, don’t have to teach their teenage boys to be extra careful when dealing with police“

I agree with Gingrich, but all anyone has to do when dealing with police is do what they say and don’t act like you have a weapon and don’t be a smartass. Also don’t commit crimes.

I saw a survey recently that said most Blacks are satisfied with their lives.

Meanwhile half of the federal employees are affirmative action hires. Do not talk to me about discrimination.

They blame whitey for all their problems while doing nothing to educate themselves.

You pretty much nailed it. It may be generational, but my much younger coworkers are not well read or inquisitive. They can produce a heckuva power point, so long as the spell check is operational.

My military experience clouded my vision, because I worked with people from all races and creeds. We had each other's backs, as it should be.

” They see the big picture, but their redneck rube constituents see only their little pet peeves.”

Very true, but the “redneck” reference isn’t contextually how I was using it.

How many times did he mention Calista? It’s so annoying how he constantly injects her into his conversations.

The Jamaicans I knew growing up in NYC would call them what they called themselves. The Jamaicans and other Island Blacks hated American blacks.

What happened in MN and Baton Rouge are being singled out plain and simple. The cop may or may not have been right or wrong in each case, or may have overreacted to the situations, but they did it based purely on experience. Not bias or race issues. We don’t know the facts to say what yet, but both are now established in some circles as race-based acts, no matter what the situations turn out to be. White people get shot and killed by police too. Most likely in the exact situations these two men faced. We as a society are now poisoned by magnified anecdotal situations and pure lies such as Michael Brown and Baltimore. Has there ever been a racist act by a cop, most likely. It’s in minute numbers. Do cops in this country face thousands of life and death situations daily resulting in a very occasional situation like this. Yes. With many if not most with african-american individuals. That’s the reality. There are two parties to this situation, and it ain’t the cops at the root of the problem.

Perhaps, but whether or not he get’s the nod is Trump’s decision.
