DJ Todd Schnitt loses suit against former attorney in defamation case against Bubba the Love Sponge

TAMPA — Radio DJ Todd Schnitt and his wife, Michelle, were hit Friday with nearly $700,000 in legal fees the couple had refused to pay after losing a defamation trial against rival shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge Clem in 2013.

Handing a victory to the Schnitts' former attorneys at the law firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, a jury found the couple's claims of legal malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty baseless. After considering the case for nearly a day and a half, the six-person jury cleared the firm, along with the Schnitts' former attorney C. Philip Campbell, of wrongdoing.

In addition to the roughly $1 million they already have paid the firm, the Schnitts may have to come up with $669,200 more. But Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick didn't get everything it wanted. Although the firm said the Schnitts owed it $978,278, jurors awarded it about $300,000 less in compensatory damages.

From the title of the story plus its April Fools Day date, one could easily assume this was some sort of joke. Unfortunately for Schnitt, it's not and now he must live in a World of Financial "Schnitt" having to pay off legal bills that started with a lawsuit that should NEVER have been filed.

What went thru Schnitt's mind to think that a PUBLIC FIGURE satirizing another PUBLIC FIGURE is grounds for filing a lawsuit? His lawyer wife should have known better. Hey, I'm no legal beagle but even I know there is absolutely no grounds for such a lawsuit.

However, there is a very small ray of light for Schnitt. This whole thing sounds like the basis for a comedy movie ("World of Schnitt" or "Schnitty Case Against Bubba the Love Sponge") which he could write up as a screenplay. See, a talk show host gets talked into filing a completely baseless lawsuit by his ex-prosecutor wife which leads to comedic episodes over the years such as his lawyer getting fooled into drinking himself into a DUI. Along the way, Schnitt's life savings goes down the tubes in legal fees for the lawsuit that should never have been filed against (LOL!) Bubba the Love Sponge.

The hardest part for Schnitt in writing up such a screenplay is that if wants to remain true to life, he has to present himself and his wife as complete IDIOTS.

Okay, so now he owes about $700,000 to his former lawyers but HOW does he pay his current lawyer? Will that lawyer also sue and then Schnitt will have to hire another lawyer to defend him from his current lawyer. Then when the court rules that he must pay his current lawyer, his new lawyer will probably also be suing Schnitt to get his legal bills paid. You see what is happening? It could be a never ending chain of suing lawyers that follow Schnitt into the grave.

And to think this all started because his wife filed a dopey suit against Bubba the Love Sponge.
