Venezuelans cried at the sight of fully-stocked supermarket shelves in Colombia.

Pregnant women, children and even elderly Venezuelans crossed into Colombia on Sunday after the border was temporarily reopened, allowing them to buy basic foods and toiletries -- rare commodities in their home country.

Tearful Venezuelans had gone weeks without basic food items like milk, flour and toilet paper. It's a sad but common part of daily life today in crisis-ridden Venezuela, a country that has the world's largest proven reserves of oil. Colombian officials estimate that about 100,000 Venezuelans crossed the border.

Venezuela is expected to dive deeper into the abyss this year, according to new projections published Wednesday by the International Monetary Fund.

I remember, around 1990, a Russian exchange student almost going into shock when she went in her first Walmart store.

Watch the movie "Moscow on the Hudson". One of Robin Williams' better movies. It has a scene just like that.

I believe at some point the past voting is irrelevant, as the choice no longer presents itself. Look at the US today (heading into the November election); that Hillary is even a candidate, and running par with Trump (or ANY challenger), speaks volumes about issues with elections. Romney was right that 47% of the vote was already in the Dem column; I hope foreigners don’t judge the rest of us when people like Obama win elections. The media bias, combined with a general dumbing-down and mass wealth transfers, has made it very difficult for normal taxpaying Americans to be represented in the White House.

The fact that the IRS targeted conservative groups, denying them their tax-exempt status with elections approaching, is another indicator as to how past votes become meaningless when a party in power works overtime to remain there.

I am sure no store in Colombia would accept Venezuelan currency. They must have dollars stashed someplace. Or some items they can sell in Colombia.

I don’t think that that would work. The government would confiscate the rights when the economy turned around or whenever they saw fit.

Investing in Venezuela is a bad idea for that reason and probably why the country will continue to sink into quicksand. They need large companies to develop their resources (oil, etc.) and they have driven those companies out of their country.

Moscow on the Hudson was just on TV. A highly underrated movie. I particularly liked this exchange between two of the characters.

“And what’s worse, our leaders have no balls.”

“Ahh, but there you are wrong. Our leaders DO have balls. And soon you will see them. Hanging on the Kremlin wall. After the next revolution!”

If someone had told me 20 years ago that Venezuela would fall this far even under socialism I don't think I'd have believed them.

If someone had told me seven and one half years ago that the United States would fall this far even under Obama I don't think I'd have believed them. If they told me four years ago that the people would be stupid enough to reelect him I would have laughed when I should have cried.

In 1968 an elderly relative living in Leningrad was permitted to come to the States to visit her (my) family. She had exactly the same experience when seeing our local grocery store for the same time. And it was just an average place.

Oh, and I also remember shortly after the 1968 election my parents were loudly cursing Richard Nixon (they hated the guy). My relative started sweating and shaking in terror. “Children, the walls have ears” she said in Yiddish. A very instructive moment.

Actually, I was just being my usual snarky self to ridicule the pending demise of socialism in Venezuela. I was just kidding about United Fruit buying up the country.

Sorry, when I do that I should use a / sarc tag, I know.

We had the same thing happen with an exchange student from South Africa at a publix. She was amazed so much food could be in one place.

I saw a photo of this from the first weekend it happened. A woman walking and her son was carrying the TP. The brand name was Elite. Ironic, wiping their butts with elite TP. Wish I’d have snagged the pic.

I watched the video, looks like a lot of morbidly obese people to me.
Not doubting the shortages but they are not starving.

Gorbachev once stopped his official motorcade at a small grocery store

Totally unplanned, random location, by HIS direction

He wanted to see for himself if all the USA Supermarkets were just a setup to fool the Russians (they did that to us, so they suspected we were doing the same thing)

He was so amazed by the stocked shelves he said (privately) that if the Soviet people saw this they would be rioting.

Socialism fails every time its tried in groups bigger than a family.

At home we are 100% totally socialist. I am the only one who can work so I provide for everyone. From each (me) according to their means, to each (my children) according to their needs.

But make me add my lazy next door neighbor into the mix, the guy who is too stupid to hold a job, and I am not so keen on supporting him too. And that breaks down the socialist model after just TWO families- imagine for million's?

We should start offering to BUY oter countries and make them new states.

Could you imagine what we could do with Venezuela’s resources?

Usually they only stock Clint Eastwood brand. It's rough, it's tough, and it doesn't take sh*t off of anybody.
