Really not much Trump could do but let Cruz hang himself if he went off-script. Whatever damage Cruz thought it could do to the Trump-Pence campaign, backfired in a big way. Ted Cruz is done.
It would be funny if Cruz thinks this can propel him in to a 3rd party run because he alienated many people tonight.
