Can anyone explain what Cruz thought to bring about his appearance tonight. What possible good does he think this will do for him? I don’t get it. He destroyed whatever shred of respect some had for him. I personally donated twice to his campaign and could not be more confused than I am now with Ted’s actions. The guy must have some mental problems.

You shouldn’t be confused. Cruz did what Cruz has always done. He promoted Ted Cruz. His filibuster. His government shutdown. The only thing those accomplished were to promote the image of Ted Cruz. His fellow Senators have always disliked him because of his egotism.
What you say tonight was Ted Cruz believing he could give a great speech and that speech would set him up for a Presidential run in 2020. He miscalculated badly.
But, perhaps, this might really be the spark that truly consolidates the republican party behind Trump.
IMO he just used the the GOP convention to launch a write in campaign.
The primaries sent him over the edge.
It happens sometimes to people with enormous egos.

Cruz is gambling that enough of his supporters will stay home in Nov. or vote for Hillary, that she will win and not Trump. Don't be surprised if he actively encourages his supporters/followers to do exactly that. Then he can run against her in 2020.
