There’s not much (safe) surgery that can really fix you below the rib cage the way that old-fashioned foundation garments could.

(Of course, if you had too much to stuff-and-cinch, you risked fainting frequently ;-)

You can do a lot with how the various lines of a dress are shortened or elongated; here’s an interesting snippet by Edith Head, on how the..um..’accoutrements’ of Bette Davis were handled:
