1. Because the vehicles are built in factories running on electricty mostly produced in generating plants powered by burning oil or coal or by nuclear fusion.

2. Because the electricity to charge the batteries that power the vehicle is produced in those same power plants fueled by burning fossil fuels or by nuclear fusion.

3. Because the large negative impact on the environment from the manufacture and subsequent disposal of the vehicles and batteries is greater than the small positive impact of not powering the vehicle directly with fossil fuels.

If fusion worked it would solve all our energy problems.

You mean nuclear fission, not fusion. Fusion so far can only be done with a thermonuclear device - a H-bomb.

I am leaving current experimental where fusion is said to occur but it's a break even thing. As much energy is released as is used to force the event.

Fission, not fusion. If they ever manage to get a fusion plant producing power, that’ll be something.
