I have to admit, I’ve heard two different takes on this.

One is that presented in this thread, that Huelskamp lost because he was a never Trumper feeling the wrath of the voters.

The other is that he was a Tea Partier who couldn’t get along with people in Washington, and who was flooded by a bunch of out of state and chamber of commerce money.

Might have been a little of both.

I suspect that there are enough voters who are disgusted with the "nevertrump" disgusting backstabbers that they don't care how conservative their other positions are, they're goin' down unless they're incredibly secure and established.

This creep deserved to lose.
