A New Jersey suburb known for its tree-lined streets and stately, multimillion-dollar homes has been transformed into a battleground over both a proposed mosque and the free speech rights of residents who oppose the project.

Bernards, a township of about 27,000 an hour west of New York City, has been cleaved by controversy since 2011, when its Planning Board took up a proposal for a 4,250-square-foot mosque in a residential neighborhood known as Liberty Corner. The applicant, Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, is led by a former Bernards mayor and has filed a federal civil rights suit accusing members of the board of religious discrimination in ultimately rejecting the project.
Some 33 residents who spoke out against the project at dozens of public meetings have been subpoenaed in an effort by the plaintiffs to prove bigotry drove the decision.

Couldn’t they just say “We don’t mind the mosque, we just don’t want the munitions depot which always accompanies them”?
CONGRESS shall make no law...the people however...
We don’t need no stinkin’ mosques in America!
Good for the people of this town. They recognize the nose of the camel peeking under the tent.
“NJ town rocked by charges of bigotry after rejection of mosque”
So?
Big Media and their god in the white mosque have been unfazed by charges of bigotry since early 2009.
“Some 33 residents who spoke out against the project at dozens of public meetings have been subpoenaed in an effort by the plaintiffs to prove bigotry drove the decision.”
So let that be a lesson to anyone else who plans on exercising their “free speech”.
Their town, their rules.
Evidently they don’t want feral muzzies spoiling their neighborhood.
Seriously? “Lawyers for the Muslim organization want to interview residents who spoke out against the mosque, and to review their email messages, social media posts and any other evidence they say may prove they were motivated by bias.”
The same people condemning are the same that would complain if someone built Section-8 housing near their homes.
Do any mozlim countries allow churches, chapels or, um, synagogues?
Then they must be terrible bigots.
>>Couldnt they just say We dont mind the mosque, we just dont want the munitions depot which always accompanies them?
Exactly. Failure to meet all the federal HazMat storage regulations should be reason enough to deny the permit.
The “democrats” and their Islamfascist pals are quickly turning being called a “bigot” into a badge of honor. If the Muzzies want to build an “In Yo Face, America” mosque, they need to go home and build one.
This will be the SOP for the foreseeable future by Muslims -
propose something so large or out-of-proportion in a certain area (like a giant mosque), then when the area’s residents oppose it out of simple common sense, scream “religious discrimination”.
(BlackLivesMatter does a variation of the same, except they scream “racism” when they get opposed.)
This tactic has had tremendous success in Europe, where the wimpy citizenry always back down rather than put up with the unbearable, unsufferable dignity of being labelled a “bigot’.
Will Americans be as wimpy and intimidated?
Really, like taxes taking down mobsters, maybe hazmat storage zoning can get these... ARF!
No more bomb factories please.
Why not just cite the Koran and claim Islam is not a religion and is inherently dangerous?
Get it before the court once and for all.
Uh, the only question that seems pertinent is: is the proposal located in a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood?
If the answer to that question is “yes”, then sorry, unless the majority of the residents in that neighborhood are Muslim, there’s no reason for a Mosque to be built there. I know I wouldn’t want my property values to plummet because of the danged call to prayer played 5 times a day over loudspeakers.
