They lie because they have come to the conclusion there is no upside to telling unpleasant truths and not being re-elected as professional politicians who could not make such a cushy living doing something else, and there is no downside to telling bold-faced lies in order to get re-elected, because nobody calls them out on it, and they get re-elected anyway.
