I planned to visit next year. How bad is it? Do I need to carry a baseball bat with me?

Use Wasp\Hornet spray. It has a range of over 20 feet and you don’t have to explain to a judge why you have it in you car.

You'll be fine. If you stay at the new hotel next to Graceland you don't even have to leave the premises. They're not going to let the thugs overrun the main tourist attraction in town. Just wear your Elvis suit...

Well, it’s been a number of years since I worked for a SF-based company that had a mfg plant in Memphis, but Graceland is on the old north-south highway (US 51) that used to be the major way to go in those directions before the Interstate was built. Our local plant manager’s favorite lunch spot, Beef and Liberty, was right across the street from Graceland, and when Elvis died they bulldozed it and a bunch ofher businesses to bulit the “park” where they now have Elvis’ airplane and other stuff on display. I was actually in Memphis on the day Elvis died. But no, unless it’s really deteriorated, it’s not that it isn’t a safe place to go.

If they’d let you, a gun would be preferred. Not so bad during the middle of the day. Just not a great neighborhood. Come at Christmas, best time. Be prepared for high prices and a blah tour if you chose any other time of the year.

AVOID the Rendezvous RIBS, horrid stuff. Beale street is not safe. Trolley is a joke as are the other usual tourist stuff. Graceland is the only real tour spot. Oh, uninsured and no DL Kamikaze drivers on I-40/240, besides the usual road construction.
