A unique index published by the Cato Institute ranks states by how free they are based on weighted criteria. "Freedom in the 50 States" ranks the states using dozens of measures for each of three major categories: fiscal policy, regulatory policy, and personal freedom.
The authors seek to improve their methodology with every publication, refining the methodology to render a result as close to what their notions of "freedom" are.

I moved from Washington to Kentucky to gain freedom. In Seattle, you need a building permit to build a shed. In my county in KY, I can build a house without an inspection - or permit. But I’ll probably have to pay cash. But even that’s OK, since it will cost a fraction of what it would in Seattle.
And the ANUAL property taxes on 32 acres, with a newer home, is the equivalent of one months car payment on a $30k car.
Yet Washington is much higher up the freedom list. Weird.

Ya can't even order a mixed drink in that state, not unless you give the bar your bottle. You have to buy your drink before you buy your drink.
This shows Alaska in the top five, when the Feds control 90% of their land. What a joke article.
This freedom index says "On personal freedom, Michigan is hurt by the fact that it had a super-DOMA banning same-sex partnerships of all kinds in 2014."
And more blah blah.
Clearly satire. No way in hell you get more personal freedom in Texas, Oklahoma or Colorado than in New Mexico.
For me, freedom is the right to refuse to participate in a homosexual marriage. To them, it scores against you. :-)

My late father-in-law, who lived in the Chicago suburbs, refused to believe that we don’t have zoning in my county is SE Missouri. When I told him that no permit was required to even build a house, his response was “How can the county collect its taxes?” He was a village alderman and his first concern was always “are the rules being followed”.

I have no doubt that soon if they send you an invitation on face book to come and watch them play dress up and you don't show up you will be forced to have a doctors note or be punished.
It has become something like a performance by Nero. As of yet no one has admitted faking going into labor to get out of it but the key word is "admitted".
You must lead a sheltered life. Mixed drinks were available even when he state was dry.
Elks, Oddfellows, VFW, American Legion, AmVets DAV and others that I can't remember. I honestly don't remember if the BYOB stuff was ever enforced anywhere, having left there at least 30 years ago, but I don't remember ever having trouble getting a drink in OK.
How about Indian Casinos? I was there a few years back but since I quit drinking 30years ago I don't recall even asking.
My top priorities in freedom are: control over my own money (i.e., low taxes), and control over my own protection (i.e., few or no state infringements on my individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms). Sadly, I live in the socialist hellhole known as the People’s Republic of Maryland, which is among the least free states in the union.
