I'd call it more ideology than race per se. Even several years ago, when George W. Bush was noticeably more popular here than he is now and there might've been less criticism of his choices than there is today, neither Powell nor Rice was regarded as securely conservative. (For example, there was never that much enthusiasm about the idea of a Rice presidential campaign.) If I remember correctly, there wasn't much shock around here over what they did.Yes they were all happy. Wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.
