Key's full poem actually has a third stanza which few of us have ever heard. In it, he openly celebrates the murder of slaves. Yes, really.

The slaves in the poem refer to the practice of British sailors kidnapping Americans aboard American flags ships and forcing them to join th British Navy. This practice was one of the main causes of the War of 1812
