Look at our culture. Until recently few feared guns, they were apart of our society (look at children toys as an example).
There has been a major propaganda campaign against guns (and gun owners) for decades. Advertising works and in this case anti-gun lobby has been advertising non stop and convinced a lot of people their lies were true.
The real question is who is behind this anti-gun propaganda?
People fear guns because they make loud noises, not because they claim so many lives.
