The Left is Busily Planting Fake Red-Meat Conservative News Sites
The Stream ^ | August 31, 2016 | Rachel Alexander

Almost all of us have been a victim of accidentally spreading fake news at one time. A trusted friend emails you a link to an article that is red meat for the conservative base; it sounds legitimate, and the name of the site even sounds official. You forward the article and post it on Facebook and Twitter — and then the backlash is embarrassing. Multiple people point out you’re wrong, and you feel like an idiot. But how were you to know, especially in this information overload, social media era? It has become normal to quickly skim articles and headlines. And why would you suspect your most trusted, intelligent friends would be sending you false news?

By posting these outlandish tales, the sites attract many page views, which allows them to make money from advertisers. Even more nefarious, some are run by Democrats in order to make conservatives look like radical extremists. The strategy, an insider told me, is to fool so many conservatives into spreading a ridiculous, fake article that finally a prominent elected official falls for it. Then the left pounces on the official and makes them look foolish and/or an extremist.

As I’ve written previously, putting out heroic stories about Donald Trump that turn out to be false doesn’t help Trump when people discover they are false.

Some of the worst offenders are sites that rip off names from legitimate conservative news sites. World News Daily Report is a typical example. It sounds very similar to the conservative site WorldNetDaily, which recently renamed itself to WND. The disclaimer on the site says nothing about the news being fake; instead, it disingenuously states that the site is not responsible for inaccurate information.

Remember that certain “endorsement” the other night that seemed unbelievable? Well, I think it was unbelievable. Maybe it was one of these sites.

“They create these fake conservative sites, load them with outlandish claims, and then post “quotes” from them on facebook as an example of what the right believes.”

When they try to do this, it is important to dilate their efforts with similar ‘noise’ involving the left. Those who are savvy enough to do this from an internet/IT perspective, and who have the resources and time, could be very helpful.

On the other hand, getting out in front of efforts like this, and telling the public that this is going to be happening, before it does, is another effective way of neutralizing their subversive efforts.

WNDR assumes however all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any persons, living, dead, or undead is purely a miracle.

Also, is there a conservative alternative to Snopes?

Ya, a great site. FreeRepublic (http://www.freerepublic.com). It's a great site for flushing out the truth. You don't even have to be logged in.

I get my fake news from CNN, MSNBC, PBS and Comedy Central.
I don’t even have to think because they do it for me!
They told me to vote for hillary because that Trump is a bad man.
K, time for my 18 hour nap.

“The Onion is fake? Oh, no.
What am I going to tell the dog?”

Don’t let him see this post, and don’t say anything about the “Onion,” and everything should be fine.

Most times, their Comments Section will give them away. You’ll find overtly racist, sexist xenaphobic insults. Overly aggressive, paranoid, violent methods suggested as solutions.
It’s like the old Colbert Report, but even less funny.

The People’s Cube is my favorite political humor site. It’s where conservatives go to pretend they are communists.

The onion is realer than most people will admit. They put up a “news from the future” bit where the presidential candidate was promising to kill everyone.

Then Duterte came along. it was prescient.

But the Duffelblog is hilarious !

I fact check anything I read on the net. It’s simpler that way.

The Internet is great because one can easily open another window and do a search on the subject. I have seen many a left-wing commenter/troll shut down with just one word.

Proof?

Although a few answer with name calling, a slur, or change the subject. I've nailed a couple on that last. I answer these guys, not for their edification (useless) but for the readers who might not be aware of the truth.

The left has been planting false flags for years. In the 1960’s, I attended a Glendale California board meeting where they discussed allowing the Black Panthers to speak on the College campus.

The first speaker from the audience went into a ridiculous rant which was racist and incoherent. The audience speaker I came to hear decided to not even go the podium because of rancor that was caused.

Later, outside the auditorium, the first speaker was talking to students congratulating himself for trashing the conservatives.

Lately there have been a few phony site polls at such addresses as abcnews.go.co, which is only one letter off the legitimate abc news site. Check your URLs!

This is, for the most part, pretty childish pranking and unlikely to have much of an effect on anyone accustomed to Internet background noise. The problem is that the better the fake, the more likely it is to have the effect a real story would, and the laughter comes after the damage is done. Not the intended effect.
