I always dreamed that he would be buried with that creepy bizarre lopsided head of his made even more lopside by being dropped from the gallows with a hangman's noose around his neck. (Shame on me, but that's the truth)

I was also a senior in college that year. I was excited about a scheduled flight to Washington, DC to interview with the CIA and wondered if the invitation might be rescinded. Most of the kids at that university were conservative and had overwhelmingly voted for Reagan. We were sickened and shocked as just two months before, we had gathered outside classrooms to watch the split screen of his swearing in on one side and the planeload of hostages in Iraq on the other waiting for the clearance to take off.

The Iranians so despised Carter that they didn't want to release the hostages until he was officially out of office. Reagan, class act that he was, waited until the plane was safely out of Iranian air space, called Carter and asked him to go to the destination air base to personally greet them on the president's behalf and welcome them home.

Can anyone imagine Obama doing anything of the sort for George W. Bush?

TOO MANY VARIABLES

Reagan was decades ago.

o Polls via telephone, no internet vs few land lines, internet

o No computers vs highly rigged computer voting
eg South America has massive computer rigged voting

Just add Immigration and not too much has changed. ERA was really a leftist issue back then.

“Nixon and his buddy Kissinger were worthless.”

Agreed. NPR, CPB, PBS, hyperinflation, wage and price controls and the 55 mph speed limit.

No question Nixon had problems—but was he worse than Eisenhower?

I’ll defer to your judgment on that one. My first political memory is the 1976 election, and my parents are too young to recall the politics of the Eisenhower years, so I am not in a good position to make a judgment of my own.

My own impression is that Ike was undoubtedly a nicer and more virtuous person, while Nixon probably faced more vicious times with less support, which makes them a little difficult to compare—how well would Ike have done in Nixon’s place.
