Polls: Today, Trump and Hillary Tied like Reagan and Carter in September 1980
Time ^ | September 15, 1980

Posted on 09/02/2016 10:01:45 AM PDT by whiterhino

Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Are Tied In Latest IBD/TIPP Poll at 39% with other candidates getting 15%. Just like Reagan/Carter in September 1980. Both candidates had/have similar unfavorables also at this time of the election cycle.

From the CNN archive of the 1984 TIME article:

"Carter and Reagan are deadlocked at 39% each, while Anderson's support is 15%... based on a national sample of 1,644 registered voters interviewed between Aug. 26 and 28."

Regarding favorability among the candidates:

From the latest IBD/TIPP poll:

"Meanwhile, nearly two thirds (62%) now say Clinton is "not honest or trustworthy," up from 58% in last month's poll. Trump scores comparatively much better, with 52% saying he's not honest or trustworthy, a three-point improvement from last month."

From the Reagan/Mondale Time article:

"Only 11% report genuine enthusiasm for Reagan; a mere 9% feel that way about Carter and 6% about Anderson. In fact, much of the support given their preferred candidates is based on voters' opposition to the others, the choices are essentially anti votes. Thus 43% of the voters who prefer Reagan say they do so because they are "really voting against Carter." Similarly, 34% of Carter's supporters say their choice is based on opposition to Reagan, while a hefty 61% of Anderson's followers admit that they are motivated by being "against Carter and Reagan." Very interesting! Most exciting election ever! (my “ever” begins in 1960)

I have a feeling the race resembles the Matt Bevin-Alison Grimes race in KY in 2014.

Last poll taken had him down by five. He won by ten.

Bevin was written off for dead by the media, the Grimes campaign and the GOP establishment. Every one expected him to lose.

When he won, people were stunned.

...and 1984 should be 1980 for Reagan / Carter.

In 1980 the mainstream media and polling companies took it to about two weeks before the election before they came clean. I feel something very similar happening today. In 1980 our economy was in shambles, our foreign policy a laughingstock and our leader appeared weak. Things haven’t changed much this time around.

Go Trump.

And if the Reagan rise was giddy and the Carter comeback startling, the gadfly persistence of Independent John Anderson adds even more bite and confusion. He blithely dismisses Reagan as "irrelevant" -- a product of the '20s -- and accuses Carter of abandoning his autobiographical guery of Why Not the Best? for a current claim of "I'm not the worst." With such a tight contest now taking shape, Anderson and his appeal to the disgruntled of both parties could prove to be the decisive difference in a few key states and swing the election, most likely to Reagan.

Well, that didn't work out as planned...

I agree. 1980 was the most exciting for me. (I couldn’t WAIT for Carter to be replaced by a fully functioning adult.)

But when Trump went to Mexico and then gave the AZ speech later on the same day... wow!

Same here. I remember "stagflation" and the Iran hostages.

Yes good catch. Thanks! I was looking at both races for Reagan.

Irrelevant headline. It is irrelvant Reagan & Carter tied in the past. That is like saying, Mario Andretti had two legs like Trump, so Trump should drive a race car.

I’m about the same age. When Reagan was running against Carter, I didn’t believe he would win and I didn’t believe he would save the country. Now we’ve got the benefit of having seen it be done before, so there’s hope it can happen again. People always said, Carter PRODUCED Reagan.

If it turns out that it is common for candidates to be tied in September by the msm polls, that is an insight also.

And we all know how that turned out!

And Carter had the advantage of being the incumbent.

It is relevant since Trump has the same kind of momentum that Reagan had.

The point is that the Democrats/MSM have been trying to make it appear as if Trump isn’t a legitimate candidate (as they did with Goldwater), but that has failed.

I also remember the election of 1980; I was a senior in college. The media and academia tried to so hard to squeeze another term out of Carter. And they hated Reagan. Absolutely hated the man.

I think I got you beat hehe...1960 is when I arrived in this great country still in my late teens. I guess I was a genius then signing up for masters degree before I was 20! Alas, age has now taken it’s toll on my various capabilities lol
