Years ago at a neighborhood barbecue I got to hear a neighbor lay out her proposals:

"We need to take guns away from people! We need to shut down all the churches: they just breed hatred. We need to nationalize the big industries! We need to take the money away from the rich people and give it to the poor people! The government can fix all this stuff if we just give it a chance!"

I walked up and indicated that I did not entirely agree.

"You!" she spat. "You're a Republican! You're a fascist! All you want to do is control people!"

I said, "I'm a Conservative. That means I want to be left alone. But it sounds like you sure want to control things."

She stormed off.

Wasn’t it the fascists who did all those things? If so, wouldn’t being called a fascist be a compliment among those people? What this woman needs is a lesson in 20th century history.
