I think you’re right about them not wanting a war. But I think they want more than Taiwan. They want to be the Asian hegemon dominating all the other countries in their region.
US strategy since the second world war has been to be the western hemisphere hegemon while preventing any other country from becomming a hegemon in their own region. The only exception has been the Soviet Union, and that didn’t work out too well for them in the end. So the question is not just does China want a war, but does the US want one.
