National Anthem has special meaning for Villanueva

Alejandro Villanueva takes great pride every time he hears the National Anthem.

Alejandro Villanueva was hesitant at first to address the conversation generated over San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick making the decision not to stand during the National Anthem before the team’s games as part of a political statement. Villanueva is respectful of the fact that everyone has the freedom to express themselves in whatever manner they see fit.

But after being asked several times during the Steelers’ open locker room session at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Monday morning what his thoughts were, Villanueva shared his take on the topic.

Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan, holds the National Anthem close to his heart. The Steelers offensive tackle, who is of Spanish descent, also holds America close to his heart and is thankful for the opportunities it has provided him.

Villanueva is a real patriot and an inspiration. He says he's 'won the lottery 3 times just by being in this country' and one should go to Europe to see real racism in how minorities are treated. Love that he earned a starting spot on the Steelers roster. Without question my favorite NFL player. Definitely worth watching the video interview. 75th Ranger, hoo-ah! This guy is the real deal.

I’m a Steelers fan since ‘77 (lived in Monroeville, PA). I love AV’s patriotism - it’s a terrific tonic for the silliness we’re seeing around the league right now. Thank you for posting this!

I’ve been a fan about that long as well. I was very happy to see that both teams avoided the stupidity of the day.

ESPN captioned AV by noting his service and deployments. (Personally, this ROTC grad can overlook his handicap of being a West Pointer)

Not to mention the 38-16 shellacking they gave the Redskins last night. Good way to start the season!

Mr. Villanueva needs to measure his words carefully.
Several layers of bosses above him are all Obama boot-lickers.

They did a respectful feature on him during last night’s broadcast.

Mr. Villanueva is okay if “several layers of bosses above him are all Obama boot-lickers”.

The real trouble begins when “several layers of bosses above him are all Obama ass-kissers”. The higher they go, the more trouble below.

Colin Kaepernick is a pud,

The PC enveloping the NFL would cause me to dump being a fan........if I were one.

good luck swallowing this one!!!

(If he was drummed out or fans boycotted and forced him out would redeem NFL....my opinion only)

;)
